I cut off my truck tonight, to order a burger at the drive-through, when I went to restart it, there was a back-firing under the hood, Loud... It started & ran OK, I checked under the hood, everything looks intact, no smoke or smells, air filter is OK.. Truck is 2001 Dodge/Cummins. My theory is that engine kicked back because I let off the clutch just enough to trip switch, & let a charge of fuel out of an intake valve, that hit the heater grid... Anyone ever had this happen, or other ideas what caused it ???

The heater grid wouldn't be on, so why would it be any hotter than any other metal in there to ignite anything????

The heater grids only work when cold starting or when the engine temp. is still cold when your restarting the engine.

It was cool enough to kick in the grid, that truck will almost always kick it in, even if engine is warm.., I have always wondered why, since the grid on the 92 model stays off if engine is warm...

I can't believe there would be a fuel "puff-back" thru an intake valve without serious engine damage. But you might try this site. They are the one for Dodge Cummins ownmers. They have a forum in which you could get an answer. Good luck on that.

Hope that helped. I'm kind of curious as to what that might be. I have been getting Turbo Diesel Register since day one and it is a good magazine and has some knowledgeable guys there so they should definitely be able to answer your question.

Check and see if one of your batteries blew up.

Batteries were the first thing I checked, both are almost new, replaced back in the summer... I think it is just one of those unexplainable things... Truck is like new, only 37,000 miles... Thanks for the input...
