Try this works for me Re: 6 volt battery in reply to Able, 11-20-2005 11:57:00
Stop at Wally World & get a pint of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Put a teaspoon full in each battery cell.

Attach charger - I try 40 amp setting for 1/2 hr then cool down then slow charge back to life.

After a day or two of limited usage - full charge again, several cycles of this should bring back full amperage with voltage capacity.

I have had batterys so dead that a charger would not tickle them and had to jump them to get any where.

Lead acid batteries are good if they can stay up on charge. Every time they get discharged a part of them dies. A deep cycle marine battery is needed if the battery is going to experience periodic discharge to any extent.
If this battery was in a state of large discharge for any length of time it is likely junk.

Thats a link where there is a lot to know on batteries.
Your battery is likely sulfated. Look it up on the link.
A slow charge is what is needed.
A 6 volt tractor needs all the help it can get.
I would get another battery.
Don't allow batteries to be discharged.
Charge them up as soon as you can.

thats nonsense that the battery cannot be brougth back. had many way too many truckers at the company used tow rok at leave freezer/refridgerators on over the weekend company policy wed jsut take the discharged batteries out put different onces in bring them back throw them on slow charge, many came back many did nnot but who knows what shape they were in before they discharged. not good for batteries but not always death unless the battery was discharged and frozen (sides poof out) but have had batter ies so low wouldnt turn on dome light come back. could take a while take your cca divide by 2 amps give you the hours.

If the battery is capable of taking a charge then a low charge rate really is the best way to do it. IF, and I emphasize IF, the battery is good, 2 amps will eventually bring up it to full charge.

i've had charging now for about 24 hrs. just went out there and it is picking up a charge, hit the starter and it will bump. i also have heard that a slow charge is the best.

Slow charge is best if battery has recently been discharged. If it has been sitting discharged a slow charge rate may never have any effect. There are pulse chargers available which do just that - large pulses - to get the modern automotive battery to take a charge.

You need a battery tester.I went out the other day and mine also bumped--got battery cables and it still bumped--I ran all kinds of test and my battery cables showed some corrision.-cleaned the cable ends and got fired right up..My super c and my 300 Farmalls were both 6 volt but not for long . for show they"re great ,for use change to 12 volt.

If battery is dead, no amount of charging will bring it back to life. How long has it been discharged?
Does battery have electrolyte?
Big battery, small battery?
Try at 10 amps to see if it will take a charge.
If electrolyte simply electrolyses into hydrogen and oxygen and battery gets hot, cut down the charge, beware of explosion, if you cause any sparks near the battery, and hope. Nothing lost trying but..... .

"If battery is dead, no amount of charging will bring it back to life." What is a dead battery? I have charged up batteries that would not light up the insrument panel.

Sid, I like discussions like this. A dead battery is brown bread, dead. This is NOT a discharged battery. A discharged battery is one that has been discharged electrically, but is still functional and will recharge.
A subtle difference to some, but nevertheless a difference. When someone posts a message as woolly as that, who really knows what they mean, as in this case until a subsequent post clearly indicated it had just been discharged too far.
