painting over fresh paint - wrong yellow!

I bought a nice 1950 John Deere A from a neighbor. When he was fixing it up, he painted the wheels with a Rustoleum yellow. Now that I own the tractor, that "wrong" yellow bugs me.

I'm thinking that perhaps since the paint job is about 2 months old at this point, perhaps I could recoat it with the right color.

I guess my question is- do I need to prime? Perhaps scrubbing them with TSP would provide enough tooth for the new paint. I plan to brush, by the way.

Of course, the reality is that it is too cold to be painting wheels anyway right now, but I figure I'll have a plan in mind if I get a warm day.

Get some fine sandpaper and sand until the old paint looks dull--use JD paint.

If you are going to be lazy and use a brush, why not speed things up a bit and use a broom!!

Just go to John deere, get a can of yellow spray paint and go to town.Give it a light coat,so it doesn"t run and when it gets tacky paint them again. After about 3 coats you"ll get a professional looking job.

I have heard (no personal knowledge) that rust-olium paints may not be compatable with others because of the oil base they use. You should research this before proceeding. At least do a test in an inconspicuous place before covering a whole wheel.

You got that right Ray. You had better check compatability. If you try to spray an enamel over Rust-oleum it ain't gonna work. I tried it.

kinda depends how good a job he did????? I'd take a chance, cuff the dirt off and paint. I've painted lots of tractors in the dead of winter by catching a nice day.
