O.K. folks, I knew that we were all going to get off the subject, so let me try this again. I was refering to pickups 1/2 ton or smaller. Not the Unimog's or International cxt's, although they are really cool. I was also not refering to your "built" rigs. I have a 80 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 camper special that is "built" and will take a beating and come back for more. I was wanting to see what y'all thought of the 1/2 tons or smaller. I'm looking at the Tacoma's for the reliability and the fact that they have a simple lever and mechanical linkage for the 4x4. I'm tired of seeing the garbage they put on trucks these days.

Just my 2cents...

I have had a "string" of GM's over the past 15yrs and for my money they've been the best trucks I've ever owned.

Had a Chevy 1/2 WT (Work Truck) I bought that was excess from the gas company fleet buy. Put 300000+ miles on it hauling everything, remodel homes, farm work, etc. Great Truck...

Then had a 1/2 ton Tahoe SUV (silverado with a different body really)... Hauled and towed and put over 200,000+ on that one.

The one I have now is a Z71 Chevy Silverado, 2003 w/near 200000 miles on it. Nothing but tires and regular oil changes. Hauling, towing, etc. Got the extended (not double) cab so the kids can sit in the back seat. It's been the best one yet.

So when it comes time to buy a new one.. I think I'm gonna stick with the Chevy. Although I'm so tempted to find a 1965 Ford like my grandfather's old truck just for nostalgia and fun driving.

A 1966 Ford F-250 this thing has been to he!! and back several times , and it has more air time than the duke boys general lee . This is one solid built truck , they probley could not build one like her today for less than 40 grand

If one brand of truck were that much better than the others thats all that would sell. They all have good points and all have bad points.What more important is how you care for it. If you buy used it depends on how the guy before you cared for it if you by new then it is up to you to care for it.

I had a '91 Dakota. Traded it off in '01. Great truck, put 227,000 miles on it, towed fully loaded fertilizer buggies with it (10,000). Nothing but brakes, tires, and batteries. Clutch was going but it was worn out. Lots of off road miles. Great truck. My dad has an '01 Dakota now, its just as bullet proof as my old one was.

I'm an old fart, BUT I will NOT buy one of those JAP or whatever "trucks", no matter where they SAY they were made, mine will ALWAYS be a Dodge, Ford, or GM!

Aloha, I never had a 4w drive nor any real trucks but I drove a 3/4t 4x4 back in 66'with a winch while surveying in the military. We went thru mud, streams, snow, up the sides of mountains and whenever that little 6cyl couldn't get us up or out, we would use the winch to pull it up or out. Where did they all go??

not much to answer your question but in response to below replys i knew a few guys who bought 4x4's for the snow in northern il (latley not much) but then becuase there trucks were so new they went out and got winter beaters and leave the truck inside no matter what. waht i love even better is they buy a new truck dont want to scratch it undrestandubly but they then use the old truck and new one sits indriveway and depreciates.

That's cause their them city folks that cause us to have all this crap on new trucks. I live in ILLINOIS and I can tell you that down here in the southern part of the state we actually USE NEW TRUCKS. Once again, my idea of making the Chicago region it's own country is a valid idea.

Don't know about "new" but my 1997 F-150 has gone through 340,000 miles with only replacing O2 sensors and an ABS sensor. I have replaced the radiator 5 times, but the first one was due to damage caused by a mechanic. The subsiquent ones were due to them being cheap NAPA CR*P parts. I'd say there are still real trucks out there.

I had a '97 F-150, 4.2L V6, 5 spd. I wouldn't drive another one if it was given to me. 72,000 miles it droped coolant in a cylinder. Bent rod, broken piston and $1,600 later it ran. 100,000 miles a/c goes out. $500 in parts fixed it myself. Lucky no labor that I paid for there. Then, I was in TN and the heater core went out. I just routed around it after finding out it was gonna be $500 labor because you have to take the dash out to change it. 130,000 catalytic or however you spell it stops up. Burns a valve on the right hand side of the block. After that it was parked. It was worthless.
I maintain my vehicles and usually take better care of them than the owner's manual recommends. I just cannot see how I could ever purchase another vechicle from that company. They would not stand behind anything on the truck. Later, after talking to a friend that worked at a blue oval dealer, he explained that Ford had major problems with the engine and was reluctant to do anything to fix vehicles with similar problems. From now on it is GM and Dodge/Chrysler.

Well - to each his own! Mine has th 5.4 V8. My other Ford is a 1999 EB Expedition. I've got 150,000 on it with ZERO problems. I have had chevy and DOGdge before and will never go back (unless it's free). We all have our favorites! It's all in how you take care of them - I change the oil every 3500 miles (I use Wally World Super Tech oil, by the way) and do PM work as I go. Most of the miles have been pulling a trailer and carrying a loaded rack & tool boxes. I've just this past week taken the boxes/rack off since both of us have "retired".

Don't know, I'm not a real big NASCAR fan, so I've never seen it! I do know that NAPA has gone down hill in the past few years - high price, low quaility, JUNK.

This subject comes up from time to time. All about the new stuff can't hold a light to the old stuff. In my life I have owned 4 fords. 62,79.86 and a 96. For all practical purposes they were the same truck. 1/2 ton, 8' box and 2 wheel drive. Can still buy the same truck today. Each time I get a newer one it does a little better than the previous one.

They are nicer to drive till something goes wrong then they are hard to find out what is wrong with them and a lot of expecive tools to work on them. Parts are way more in price too on the newer ones. If I could afford to get a new truck every few years and just drive it that would be nice but since I can't I need to be able to fix them to keep them working. They wanted $3,400.00 to put a new transmission in my 98 Dodge glad it only needed a complete fluid flush to fix it. Had I not tried to fix it myself it would have broke the bank and this truck only has 128,000 miles on it! Mark H.

Just got rid of my new 79 Chevy 1/2 ton 4X4 great truck but could not handle the loads I needed to pull. Also was a little fancy for me! Now I got a real Chevy it is a 1977 1 Ton 4X4 with a 454, 395 HP, Posi Rear End, 4.10 Gears and Duels on the back. Real Clean truck completely gone thru, new paint and interior, fully rebuit fron one end to the other for $4,000.00 and no tax! It will blow the doors off my newer 1998 Dodge 3/4 ton 4X4 360 Gas Magume in all respects and not even 1/3rd the cost. Won"t go down in value unless I wreck it and my Dodge has lost more value in the last year than I paid for the Chevy!! Course it get 3 mpg less but the Dodge can"t pull a load either. Last time I buy a new truck there a total rip off as far as I am concern. If you could see this 77 Chevy you would understand. It is nicer then the 79 was and dosen"t have all the chrome stuff on it. Course my real truck is my 94 COE Freightliner with a 3406B Turbo CAT pushing 450 hp ahead of a 13 speed. Now this one is fun to drive. Mark H.

Very soon you will see the gvw go up to 8400lbs on 1/2 ton pickups to get by emmissions laws so they will have to be tougher. I had an '89 dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 318 4sp manual, it was a good truck(had 250,000 miles on it when I parked it). I bought a brand new 2001 1/2ton 4x4 dodge, 318, 5 sp manual and it's a great farm truck, tough as nails(riddin' hard and put away wet). Very few problems with 80k miles. My '01 is rated to haul and tow more and has like 100 more hp then my'89. The new half ton pickups(any brand) are rated for even more towing and hauling. Most new 1/2 ton trucks are ruunning in the neighbor hood of at least 300hp, and they all are getting better mpg. I know my self being a farmer I'm not a fan of posh trucks that have power everything, GPS, leather, auto trans,etc. Most people want that garbage so automakers put it in. I do think your opinion of new trucks being "not real" is mute though.

Here is why I said what I said. My 97 S10 has electronic 4x4 and I have had nothing but trouble with it. It is supposed to have a 15 amp fuse in it for the 4x4 to work but you have to have a 20 amp in it for it to work properly. And yes, the dealer cannot figure it out! Also I got stuck one time because a vacuum line became disconnected! That one took us two weeks to finally find it under the battery tray! I never have a problem with my 80 3/4 ton with lockouts and MANUAL t-case.

Jon, Don't really have anything to add to my answer to your 1st post. I have never had a 4x4. SIL has a 92, I think, Toyota 4x4 which has given great service, but he has never challenged it. If you are looking at new 4x4s I would crawl under them and look how well the frames and axles are made, in addition to the checking out controls which you have done.

Resale value: Toyotas have always been good. S 10s have been good except for the small V6 which they no longer make. Ford Ranger has not been near as high as they deserve to be,IMO. The Ranger 4 cyl give great service generally, not sure about V6s. The 4wd Rangers only have V6.
Colorado has not been out long enough to have a track record on resale. I think Dodge Dakota has good resale value, but it is a larger truck only comes in 4 door now.

I had an 88 Ranger, finally sold it, with almost 200,000 miles on it. 4 cylinder, 5 speed always ran good! then i bought a 91 Ranger, with 171,000 miles on it, 5 speed 2wd. Does what i want it to do, mainly ride around, and haul tractors (lawn) and mowers, etc. And, i agree--why don't the mfgrs. make a plain Jane model, that the farmers or tradesmen can use in their work, without having to worry about plushy seats and fancy decorations on the outsides? And, my best friend is a retired zone manager for Ford Motor Co., and he said if i buy a Jap truck, our friendship is over! Rustyj

I have a 94 Ranger XLT 4x4 with automatic and 4.0.
It has been the best vehicle I've ever owned. At 32,000, I replace the electronic locking hubs with Warn manuals and have been completely happy. Radiator, water pump and fan clutch at 130,000. Cam position sensor at 145,000. And that's about it other than the normal stuff like brakes, shocks, etc. First muffler replacement a month ago. Body holding up well with no rust.

I change oil religiously at 3,500 mile (+ or - 200 miles) and honest folks, have never added oil between oil changes. Tow my Ford 2N or Farmall Super C on a 16' car hauler trailer during the spring and summer.

I don't think Rangers get the credit they desrve either. Someday, just for grins, count all the Rangers you see on the road. You'll get tired of counting in about half an hour.

I don't know about Toyota's 4 wd but I did own 2 Toyota 4x2 automatics. As a crop insurance adjuster, I ran a 1986 and a 1989 in all kinds of conditions you could imagine , never got stuck once, no breakdowns ,no troubles what so ever. Traded the '86 for the '89 but when it came time to trade the '89, the Yen was so much stronger than the Canadian dollar that I just couldn't deal. Youngest son ended up accidently burning it (and nearly the barn too!). Only reason for trading was the quick roll up of the mileage involved in that job.

Shoot there aren't any real 1/2 pickups any more. There all urban cowboy cars that look like the old trucks did. Shoot now days if you put a load on one it brakes

I'm with ya 100%!!!! I'm sick of seeing the "Urban Cowboy" trucks!!!! We need more free thinkers telling these manufacturers what REAL people REALLY want. I don't want a warm and fuzzy feeling driving down the interstate, I want to be able to make it through our dirt roads here in central Illinois in the spring when it's sloppy.

Well at least where you are its mostly flat lands. Down here in the Missouri ozraks there a lot of hils and mountains and it can be real fun tring to go some place at times. Guess thats why I like my good old 1980 chev 4X4.

Hi jon, I dont like saying it but its true. The newer Toyota's are gonna do well for ya. They are just spending waaayyy more on product development the last decade or so and our favorite big 3 are playing catch up and it is a shame. I am chevy and dodge ALL the way, just like I am IH, buying new I would go Tacoma or tundra, If I wanted a good 5-10 year ld 1/2 ton I would buy any 94-98 chevy or dodge and install mechanical transfer case and front axle lock with controls for engaGMENT THAT HAVE ACTUAL LINGAGES ( NOT WIRING). They are available from dealers. I have a 93 chev that has the slow solenoid in it that takes about a minute to fullyt actuate , its been a great truck but when I 'm in 4x4 I stay in it, so I really dont need to update. When the Toyota guys start making 3/4 ton and up trucks you can guarantee they will be good, but so are the big 3. I just hope GM gets outa there crisis and dont end up like the Electrolux plant in Greenville, Michigan
