Bought a "99 Chevy fullsize truck with the 5.3 liter V8 in it a few months ago. It has 250,000 miles on it and was treated well (have all Goodwrench service records) and never had any major repairs or replacements. I recently changed the oil and went from 5W-30 semi-synthetic to 10W-30 semi-synthetic. Temperatures have dropped lately and when I start it after it has sat 8 to 12 hours I nervously wait for any oil pressure. I do have lifter clatter for a few seconds but it did that before the oil pressure issue and I was told that is typical for that motor. Once its warmed up I have 55 to 60 lbs of oil pressure, runs like a top and uses no oil. Could it be the sending unit? Does something need to be bled? Am I in for the inevitable? I really like this truck but I can"t justify pulling the motor for just an oil pump at 250,000 miles.

Thanks in advance,
landlord7012

With that many miles I don't think I would spend the time to replace the oil pump either. It is probably starving for oil on start up not letting the lifters pump up. If it was piston slap I don't think the noise would go away until the motor warmed up. Just take it easy until the oil pressure comes up. Stan

I am going to tend to agree with most of the others here. That engine has a little rattle. Most all of them do. I would not get worked up about it. If it lived this long it will keep going. The pistons in that engine have a short skirt in an effort to reduce internal friction and they do rattle when cold.
The slightly heavier oil will slow down the time it takes to build pressure in cooler weather. I would go with the 5-30 oil that GM calls for. I would also change the filter to an AC or NAPA gold. The valve in the filter can make a big difference in how fast the pressure hits.

i have a 6.0 in a 2000 gmc and it has good oil pressure but alot of piston slap when cold was told that gm makes a tefflon coated piston to take care of this .

Fram filters are known for having leaky check valves, probably that is what you are hearing, but with that many miles, what do you expect?

I just read all the threads. You got some good advice here. I have a 98 with 80K miles. It also has CSK (cold start knock), to which Chevy says it is normal. (Just give me an abnormal quiet 350 then, without leaking intake manifold gasket, pitting front rotors, corroded wheel speed sensors, or failing tailgate cables.) I have been successful in reducing CSK by using the 5-30 pure synthetic oil and Delco oil filter. Fram would be the last on my list. You want the oil to flow fast and get to the piston skirts ASAP.
My CSK started at 17K, and has become progressively worse, lasting longer and beging at warmer temperatures. The last I heard it was primarily #1 cylinder, but no supporting evidence.

GM was paying replace pistons with a composite skirt, but would not pay to replace rings, again rumour, but a GM service manager said if I elected to have new pistons in my engine, I would not be happy with oil consumption.

Any wonder GM is having to give their rigs away?

5-30 is the recommended oil, so why not use it???

More likely you have piston slap, rather than lifter noise at startup.

For low friction and maximum mileage, GM used pistons without much of a skirt, and they were prone to clatter. There have been lawsuits over that.

Just Google "5.3 startup noise". The link below is one such "hit".

Also, are you using the correct filter? Most of these modern engines need a filter with a built-in check valve to keep the oil from draining back, causing noise and lack of oil pressure for a few seconds at startup.
Even if the filter you are using is listed for that app, I'd try a different brand just to confirm the filter is not adding to the problem.

Thanks for the link. I had hoped to quiet the clatter a little, now I just wish I had my oil pressure back. I'll just pretend I have a diesel for a few seconds LOL! I now realize I should have used whatever got it to 250,000 miles and not try to make a silk purse from a sow's ear. I just hope it's not too late to redeem myself.

Thanks, ll

I'd switch back to 5w30 in the cold.

I'm not familar with that motor but I would suspect the oil filter may be leaking down after sitting for a long period. Did you use the same brand of filter at the oil change or is this a new condition with a different filter?

It had a Puralator on it, quite a bit longer than the Fram I installed. I put 195,000 miles on my 4.3 liter using Fram Tough Guard filters (supposed to have anti-backflow device built in) but if Puralator is what it likes then Puralator it what it gets! Ben made a good point with 5W-30 too. I guess I thought I was doing some good by recommendations a midnight mechanic made. I had hoped to clear some of the lifter noise up.

Thanks, ll

Even the cheapy Walmart brand filters are better then the base Fram filters.
