Anyone with a concrete wall?

I finally got off my butt and got my Dakota to the dealership. I knew if I let the truck sit here, I"d never do anything about it. Got the call this afternoon, head gasket is bad. The bad part is the mechanic said with these little Chrysler 2.5s, 9 out of 10 have a cracked head. He gave me a worse case senerio of around $1200 and some change. Not sure what I"m going to do, it has been a cheap, reliable pickup with lots of new parts. If I get a differant pickup, might have more problems than this one does. So my question to everyone....Does anyone have a concrete wall I can beat my head on?

That was a confusing post with multiple possible solutions. Was it your own head or the head from your Dakota that you wanted to beat against the wall? Please advise.

It was my own head I wanted to beat against a wall. If I threw the head off my Dakota at the wall, it"d probably fly back and hit me in the face. Then I"d have two heads that need fixin :)

Chuck the whole thing and buy a new Toyota Tacoma. You can drive it for 300,000 miles and then sell it to a friend. That's how good they are. They're known as the "Hilux" in the rest of the world and are the most used and abused trucks in the world. Get the 2.7 4 cyl engine. Bulletproof.

I"m going to call the dealership tomorrow, have the mechanic take it apart and find out if the head is cracked. If it is, I"m going to see if I can get them to install a reman. head, intead of the new head I"m sure they are going to want to put in. For $1200, might as well spend another 600 and get a reman. engine put in. I hope it"s just a head gasket.

For those who were wondering, I use the pickup as my economy vehicle. Driving to work and back, running errands, whenever I don"t need to haul anything. It gets 20-21mpg in town, out on the road it gets 24mpg, can"t beat that. The truck"s steering and front brakes are allmost all new parts, new clutch, 2 tires that are 2 years old but still in great shape, 2 tires that have less than 3,000 miles on "em, and the radiator is 2 years old, as is the battery. I think it would be a wise choice to keep the pickup, just have to find the money for the repair....

Those 2.5 beasts eat heads about every 100K miles. If you have a good mechanic do the work, you should get another 100K miles as
long as ther rest of the vehicle is worth it.
On mine the tranny when at 150Kmiles and the son
blew the rad at 180K miles...game, set,match!!!!

Can you buy a better vehicle for your 1200 bucks? If the answer is "no", then you know what to do.

Even if you put something like a jasper rebuild in this truck and spent 2-2800.00 that would be less than 7-9 payments on a new one. And if you drove this truck for another couple of years you would be money ahead in the long run if the truck is in good shape . back on 98 I dumped 2200.00 in my 90 mazda pu and it is still running strong today I would get in it and head anywere .

First, what are you planning on doing with this truck? Do you plan to commute to work each day, are you going to just knock around on the weekends to have something to haul with, or is this you main driver? How many miles does this little truck have on it? If you still feel that the little truck is worth hanging onto, have you priced around for a bare head that you can put your old valvetrain into? This may be a cheaper alternative. Your existing head may be OK. You really won't know until you get it to the machine shop. Just some ramblings from a guy who has thrown a lot of money at old vehicles; some good, some bad.

Consider yourself lucky. I got a call from a customer tonight that just bought an older D9 CAT dozer last week. He bought it to replace an older D8 he had that ran really good but needed extensive undercarriage work. The 9 had a good undercarriage and was running good when he bought it so as you would expect he got it moved to it's new home to use. He was using it this afternoon and it started to heat some. He shut it down and tried to restart it a little later but now the engine is siezed. I won't know what's wrong til I get time to go look at it this weekend but worst case he's looking in the neighborhood of $1500 to $2000 plus, per cylinder, to get it rebuilt..and it's got a 6 cylinder engine. That said if you know what's good and bad on your truck already, it's worth spending the money to repair it. If you try to buy another to replace it that's in good shape your gonna wind up spending more than the $1200 needed to repair yours, and there's no guarante it's not gonna need $1200 worth of work itself two days after you get it home.

Forget about the head beating. A better idea might be to take the head off a good unit in a salvage yard that was running when scrapped. Cost would be probably about 1/3 of your worst case scenario. Why put a brand new or rebuilt head on such a used unit?

My two cents.

Rich,You need to snoop around a little,my daughter`s Neon blew a head gasket out of warranty. The dealer said too bad, after I showed him the print out of Chy`s "hidden warranty" they fixed it for free! They had big problems with those moters, you might get lucky.

I had a head gasket blow on an old 86 K-car I had a few years ago, it was just over the 120k mile mark. Put the headgasket on and it went for a couple more years no problems. I just had the head shaved to make sure it wasn't warped, head was good. Used it as a part trade on an 88 caravan. Car still lasted a couple more years. I think if you have something in decent shape its worth the money fixing it and knowing what you have. Like others have said. Them 2.2 and 2.5 were well known to blow head gaskets. Where would you find what Chryslers Hidden Warrenty??
