1964 Ford 2000 4 cyl gas 12 volt system?

I know this is a stupid question, but if a tractor currently has a 12 volt battery, does that make it a 12 volt system? After seeing all the 6 to 12 volt conversion kits for this model, it has me wondering if I"m missing something? Thanks.

I don't see how it could be anything but a 12 volt system if it has a 12 volt battery.

The conversion of these tractors from six to twelve volts is fairly standard:

1. The 6 volt starter is left "as-is". (It will crank much better on 12 volts.) There are 12 volt diesel starters, but I've never heard of anyone using one on a conversion.

2. The 6 volt generator and regulator are replaced with a 12 volt alternator with an internal regulator. (Although mine uses a older Ford alternator with an external regulator.) I've heard of people using the 12 volt generator from a diesel tractor to keep the appearance orginal.

3. Either an external resistor is added to the coil circuit, or the coil is replaced with one that doesn't require an external resistor. Also, because the polarity is now negative ground (due to swapping an alternator for the generator), the primary coil leads need to be swapped.

4. The 6 volt starter solenoid needs to be replaced with a 12 volt unit.

Can't tell you how many 6 volt systems I have seen where the "conversion" consisted of stuffing a 12 volt battery in it. They usually run till the battery goes dead, then call someone to bail them out.

Simple answer no. All depends on what it has and what its set at as far as chargeing system. If it has an alternator its most likely to be 12 volts, if its a genny maybe maybe not. Easy way to figure if you have a volt meter is check what voltage is acrooss the battery when running if its say 13-14 vlots its a 12 volt system if under that then its either a 6 volt system or something isn't working right
