I'm not there yet, I want to get out of school first and maybe get a trade certificate. Someday, though, I want to try a summer on a harvest crew, going from the Southern States up to Southern Alberta or Saskatchewan. Always wanted to try it. I would like to get some info on it, though, and I thought that you guys are the best ones to ask. How hard would it be for a Canadian like me to get on a crew? What is life like on a harvest crew? Any info like that would be appreciated. No BS this time, please!

What's life like on a harvest crew? Work, eat, sleep, work, eat, sleep, work ,eat,..... ..... .
Do it a least once. You won't regret it.

I done it in 1948 and 1949. It was a great experience. Most of the time I drove a truck to deliver the wheat. Some times I got to drive the combine. I think the job would be somewhat the same now and also a little different.

Spector, as far as I know there isn't any problem joining a harvest crew. I'm sure there are crews for next year being formed in Alberta right now or will in the next couple months. I think that it will help if you grew up on a farm. If you check some Canadian farm magazines you will find in the classified sections adds for crew members. Though many crews are formed in Texas and work North, many are from Alberta or Saskatchewan and work their way back home. Start making early contacts with these guys and you'll get on a crew. This is usually a 4-5 month job and its 7 days a week 12-14 hours a day. If your young as you are you'll have a great experience. Are you in the Red Deer area? I just spent 3 years at Shell Canada in Fort Saskatchewan. I'm now retired to the farm. Good luck. I hope you get what you want.

Hi Bob,

I'm actually up in Barrhead County. Lived on an acreage for the past 15 years of my 16 year life. I help the neighbors with harvest season, and haying. Haven't run a combine yet, but hope to next fall, here locally. Also worked three summers for my uncle in southern Alberta, putting up timothy for export. Long days on a piece of machinery are nothing new to me.
I love running machinery, and farming, so I thought that working on a harvest crew might be a good way to blend both together, and make a little money too. I'm not really ready, as I still have a couple more years of school yet, but just wanted to get a feel for custom harvesting before I get to that point.
Are you still in the Fort Saskatchewan area?

Lyndon, no, I left Fort Saskatchewan 2 years ago last month and retired from Shell to a farm in the Ozark hills of southern Missouri near where I grew up. I now just put up hay and sell it to people who raise cattle, horses, sheep & goats. Its what I always wanted to do but couldn't for some reason. I do it all myself and its hard work as you know but quite rewarding and I have wonderful neighbors.
Good luck to you and be careful. Bob

A fellow I went to school did this. He wrote to the big manufacturers to find out who ordered a lot of combine parts. Then he wrote to those fellows to find out the specifics. He hired on to an outfit in Oklahoma in June and worked all the way to the Dakotas.

Being still young yet, I looked into a Harvest run for 2006. Asked on some message boards just like you. I was told first and foremost, ask around to see what the best crews are to work for. Some were not bragged up by any means by a few guys. I was also told that you should be doing it for the experience not a huge paycheck, because it doesn't exsist, the huge paycheck that is. Anyways, I don't think I ever heard anyone that said they wished they hadn't have went on a run that did.

Even though I won't be doing it as it looks now, some decent full time work is available in town at the moment and I am trying to get my foot in the door at one of those places. I also didn't like it that most crews require you to have a CDL..... ...I don't have one and have no urge to get one. Hate being out on the road at all anymore, even in a car these days, people drive nuts.

My grandpappy did it when he was young.
