Shelf life of battery

OK, Engine was not spinning fast enough to get running also would only have enough "oomph" to spin it slowly for about 30 seconds. All connections seem good and tight. Went to TCS and picked up a battery, Manufactured date was Sept of 2005. Put battery on charger for a day and put it into tractor today and still get same result. Should I be looking elsewhere or should I take battery back and ask for a refund.

BTW, it is 30 Degrees here as I write this so it seems like I should be able to get things running. It is a diesel.

Thanks,

Kirk

What is the voltage measured between the starter's cast body and the heavy copper post going into the starter. Before, during and a few seconds after cranking?

Any heaters?
Diesel treated?
When filters changed?
How old is fuel?

Kirk, before I did anything else I would take the starter off and have it checked. A starter that is draging can zap a battery real quick.

Just a diesel won't cut it. Is it a lawn tractor or a D9. You keed to make sure your new battery meets or exceeds the manufactures requirement for cold cranking amps for the engine you have as previously stated.
If you've done that your starter may be draging or pulling to many amps for some other reason and you need a qualified mechanic to check it.
That being said I think it would be wise to plug in the block heater anyway....Good luck

Bad bushings in the starter will drag a battery down real quick.

Kirk, Even if a battery has a shelf life, I sure dont see one made only a few months ago and then placed on a good slow charge as suspect. What I would be looking for is one that will still physically fit in the battery compartment but the absolute highest rating available. Couple that with 00 Gauge cables n good clean tight connections n if she still cranks slow you may wanna then consider the starter or solenoid.

Yep, I replaced a 4DLT w/ a 4DLT which is all that will fit. She starts real good when it is warm, but anything under about 40 is causing me fits.

If the new battery performs the same as the one you took out it's possible that both batteries are good and the problem is elsewhere. As others have stated, check cables and then starter.

What kind of tractor/diesel? Does it have glow plugs in cylinders? Manifold heater? Auto preheat timer relay? Injector timing retard? What kind of fuel are you using? Look back in archives and you'll see various hard to start diesels that started after proper cold start drill used. Some makes and models need extraordinary help- early Mercedes owner club advises drivers to stick hair drier into aircleaner and run for 5 minutes before trying to start in cold weather, responses post back as 'it works!'. I posted cold start drill for a IHC350 last year for someone- next day post back was it started 1st try when done right, had run battery down trying to start improperly. You note that the engine starts OK when warm, trouble at less than 40 degrees, that implies reasonably good starter and basic wires- may not have a good cold start preheat relay or you're not waiting for a 'start' light to flash. Brother got a cheap diesel car at auction because it wouldn't start when decased owners relative tried to demonstrate that it ran- no $1000.00 opening bid. Outbid scrap dealers $200.00 bid, get in car, turn key to 'cold start', wait a minute for the 'heating' light to go out and 'start engine' light to flash, engage starter 3 seconds and engine fired/ran. Gets 45 MPG, but extreme cold is hard to start. What does the manual say? RN

maybe you need bigger battery with more cold cranking amps or you need to plug in that diesel and let it warm up , or starter could be going bad
