I'm told you have a satellite internet service. I'm looking at Direcway for internet so the wife can work at home. I'm hearing mixed reviews -- but mostly positive. I'm in western Penna. Can't get DSL, no cable -- I'd still never trade for living out here in the woods -- so it looks like satellite is the only option. But with a $1,500 commitment up front, I want to hear some opinions. Thanks.

Rodney

We looked at both Starband and Direcway when we were moving to Colorado last spring & weren't sure what sort of local service might be available. One problem with Starband is that they don't support a local network, i.e., if you want to use a router & more than one computer on the connection, you're on your own. Plus, they require software to be installed in a computer. Direcway does support local networks & does not require any software to be intstalled (beyond the normal ethernet/TCP-IP drivers).

Ended up with terrestrial microwave (wireless ISP) service. Works great but does require that you have a line of sight path to a service tower.

Rodney,

I've got three of the things right now working in conjunction with our phone bank network. They ran 'bout $700 apiece for the equipment/setup and they range from roughly $49 to $69 a month for service depending on the original length of the plan. The 3-year contract is the cheapest.

The only thing I don't like about Starband is their payment setup. I have to send three separate checks; can't pay 'em all on one 'cause they seem to loose track of which account is what. :>)

They work great except in wet, heavy snows which block the signal. If I had it to do over again, I'd mount the silly things at ground level on a concrete pad.

I don't know if your wife's venture is going to be service critical or not, but if it is, don't forget to buy yourself a generator to power the dishes, modems and/or computers.

Since we here absolutely cannot "be down", ours paid for it's purchace price the first morning we used it.

Allen & Rodney - they make heaters for those dishes. I don't think they make anything for the LNB however.

I don't have satellite dishes, therefore no personal experience. But I read a post on another site that reported good results in covering the dishes in black garbage bags. Apparently the wind whipping the plastic helps keep the snow shook off the dishes, thereby minimizing trips to the roof with a broom. You might give it a try.

Well heck Jim,

Even my little pee brain might be able to handle that bit of expertise. And, it sounds like it just might work too. :>)

Thanks,

Allan

Spraying the dish with silicone spray once a year also helps keep the dish clear. Snow just slides off.

Rodney, can't vouch for this myself but you might look into agristar.com. I checked it not too long ago and I think it was something like $500 for equipment and set up and then $50 a month. Just a suggestion

Hi Rodney,

I use Starband (www.starband.com) because I need both directions up and down.

Boy! $1500 is pretty steep isn't it?
