I have a compact AC 5030 tractor, about 28 HP. I was thinking around a 4-5ft bush hog. I have mainly weeds (golden rod - that get roughly 6-7ft high if not cut) tall grass and a lot of sumac saplings that come up every spring. I'm thinking along those lines of 'rough cut' mower that will handle small saplings and small bushes. Not sure about these off brand mowers as well..parts readily available? Just looking for some input. Thanks

Sorry to get you guys all riled up lol. Figured Winter is a good time to get a bush hog. The tractor has a loader on the front, so it shouldnt be too bad. I'll try and find a good name brand used one with some life left in it. Thanks for the input guys.

Oh yeah, didnt realize till it was too late that I didnt have enough characters for 'hog'. Sorry LOL

Whatever you get, watch out for its weight. People like to get real heavy rotary cutters because they figure heavier is better from a durability viewpoint. But too much weight on the back of the tractor can reduce steering effectiveness and makes the tractor tippy when going up hill. If you do get a heavy weight unit, plan on maybe putting some weight on the front end to help balance the machine.

Drive around to your local dealers and look at what they have, if you find something you like then you should go in and haggle with them. 5 footers are alot cheaper brand new than 6'+ anyways. I bought a new Rhino TW72 6ft medium duty last year, gearbox has a 5yr warranty and they are pretty reasonably priced. I live in the north country, where there are lots of stones, so I have learned auctions are not the place to pick up good used, 99% of the 6 footers are busted up junk around here, and they always sell for brand new price.

Well - try going to auctions. Around here (SE Nebraska) the smaller ones (4-5 footers) usually go for cheap ($50 to $150). The bigger ones (6' plus) go for big bucks. I bought my old 5' JD for $25. Been using it for 4 years now. It's beat up, but the grass don't mind how it looks!

Auction. Around here sales have good ones for sale cheap. Most of the farmers around are looking for 10' or bigger.

Cheap ones are OK, but will need looking after and servicing regularly. Maintenance costs could get pretty high! ;>)

A marketing strategy. Gets our attention and hopes up, then bombs out with tractor talk. Kind've like them time-share things.

My first thought was the same as buddy paul, then digressed to it being a political msg, wrong board, or maybe lilac or mulberry request?

My exact series of thoughts too, as I waited for the dialup to load the message. :)
