Auction fever. Happens at auctions all over the world. Nice if it's your item being sold, sucks when you wanted it for cheap.

CEB, your right, it is a free country. If your saying it isn't illegal to ( RUN A BID ) or be involved in a scam auction just get caught doing it. Problem is too many times people just say oh well and don't push the issue. As far as people being stupid sometimes they just get caught up or don't understand, but that don't make them stupid and I do feel bad for people like that because before they know what happened they've been had. Don't get me wrong there are people who are stupid simply because they have more money then brains. Just adding my 2 cents, and wishing everyone happy holidays.

Tunnel Vision, some people get it, others don't. I know a few folks that once they start bidding, they won't stop, even though the item goes for a rediculously high price. I saw an Xbox 360 a couple of days ago on Ebay sell for $10,300, just the console and no games, now that is crazy!.

I chuckle when a book goes for more than Amazon.com new prices + shipping, or the seller"s normal price.
And often there are better second hand bargains on amazon as well!

The thought of winning something is mighty powerful.

The ones I like are when an item goes for $66 when it starts at 99 cents with no reserve but the same item doesn't get a bid when it starts at $12 with a buy it now.

People are crazy. That's it. End of Story! ;-)

It isn't just E-Bay, I have been to several live auctions where certain used and well worn items sold for a higher price than what a brand new identical item would sell for in the store, and yes, there are shill bidders on e-bay, but there are shill bidders at live auctions also. The trick is to know what an item is worth, bid your top dollar and quit. If you win the item, that's great, if someone outbids you, so be it.

Not only at auctions but at private sales.
I was lookind at an 8n (For sale by owner)
that had a "dupont overhaul" and needed a new rear wheel and tire and new rubber on the front trying to get the person down to a more reasonable price as we all know they are selling for $1000 to $2000 for a real good one not needing much work when this Amish looking guy with a black hat and beard and cane shelled out about $2500 for it and asked if it could be delivered some where in Tecumseh.The tractor was worth $1800 tops so he must have wanted it real bad or just had money to burn.I guess what i'm trying to say is that just drives up the price for us people that are just trying to get buy and have something we can afford to work on

Yeah, it is strange that people with money don't feel an obligation to keep the prices down for other bidders.

The N's in my area regularly bring $2000-3000. Personally I wouldn't give $500 for new one.

I will admit that prices are sometimes crazy on Ebay. You really need to know the market for what ever you are buying or selling there. I have used Ebay for several years, with over 800 transactions. One (1) went bad. I did not always get everything I thought something was worth, and I have paid a little too much a couple of times. I"ve also had many things sell for way way more than I have expected, and I have gotten some really, really good deals. As with anything in life "be careful". If I thought everyone in the world was out to cheat me, I guess I would just stay home and never get involved with anything. Glad I do not think that is the case. Remember the old saying, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Ebay can be a fine place, just be careful.

Another totally out of control venue for crooks and thieves. You have no way on Earth of knowing if the opposing bidder(s) are real or set up by the seller. It is so simple to have a "friend" bid it up against a person that does not know when to stop. The same thing happens daily at live auctions.
We can blame the buyers but they obviously are part of "what the market will bear". The real problem is unscupilous sellers. When caught, they simply reappear with different screen names, get their wives or girlfriends sceen names, and many more slight of hand moves.
A smart person would not buy on that forum UNLESS they knew the seller first hand, just like we are learning to do in the tractor world.

There is nothing illegal about that. Last time I checked this was still a free country. I do not feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to bid way more than something is worth. If you are planning on buying something, better research what its worth BEFORE bidding. If its going for too much.... then STOP BIDDING! If you don't know what its worth then DON'T BID!

I always figure that I`m not bidding against anyone else, instead I`m bidding on the value of the item. On almost every item I bid on, I look at the other items that person has for sale, what they have sold in the past, and who has or is bidding. When I see the same bidder bidding on many of a persons items, but not bidding on simular items of a different seller, I know with out a doubt what is happening. Unless I can get a really good deal, I just avoid that seller totally. Ebay makes this sort of research pretty easy, but it"s almost impossible at a live auction.
