Howdy,

Came across a new item in an ag equipment catalog (fastline ohio edition) that peaked my interest and I've been doin some research on it. It is a fluffer tedder made by a company called Pequea. Has anyone had any experience with one of these? If so, how good or bad and how much do they run? I quoted one from a dealer here in ohio new with no wheels for $2500. I'm sure a used one would go a good bit less but I'm just tryin to get some ideas first. Thanks and God bless.

Here in Quebec in the St. Laurence river valley, tedders are standard equipment on dry hay making farms. We wore out 2 New Holland 4 rotor tedders. Than we thought that we wwould be smart and buy a 6 rotor New Holland machine. The 6 rotor was no stronger than the 4 rotor frame, gears, etc. After 2 seasons it went to the consignment sale... (with no reserve). Then we purchased a new Italian manufacture machine (can not think of the name, too cold to go and see), a large diameter 4 rotor hydraulic lift and tilt machine. Really well built. Worked as much as the NH 6 rotor. The large diameter rotors do a super job throwing out the hay. Takes the Farmall 504 all her horses in heavy hay in 4th. Damn I can not think of the name. If I get the name I will start a new post. QR

Tedders work great, even on straight alfalfa. It takes a little bit to get to know how to use them though. I beat all the leaves off my alfalfa ONCE. THEN GOT GOOD ADVISE; Ted early am the day after cutting, while the dew is still on,and that's all. If Your alfalfa gets rained on, tedding once will shed the water and save it, but you need to rake it with dew on then or you will only have stems.

I've got a fluffer, straddles the windrow, made by Grimm in VT. I'd guess it was made back in the 60s. It drives off the wheels. I put a hitch on my pinwheel rake, chain up all but two wheels down to flip the hay and pull it behind. Works good and does both jobs in one trip.

I have a JD 752 4-basket model. It is really a Kuhn painted green. Have had good luck with it here in central missouri. I on;y do orchard grass/fescue hay though. Everybody around here uses them. I could never get the hay dry otherwise as I just cut with a 3-point Vicon 7'10" disc mower, and it doesn't condition. I gave $1200 for mine used, but it is a little tired, still teds hay though. You can buy a brand new 2 basket around here for about $1700 and a 4 basket for about $3g's.

have been keeping up with your posts. i would skip on tedder at this time ,and look for a disc or hay bine. disc bine would let you cut late in to night after work . i know your time is short. here in tx i cut from 6 am till hot then cut from 7 or 8 pm with lights with disc mower to get it down.ive cut till midnight. you need to get it down any not worry about a second trip with tractor. i would look in to a disc mower that your RUNNING tractor could pull(ask dr hay).horses and cows dont care if hay is cut at 10 am or 9 pm,you can adjust quality when you have time and money. yes i have a tedder i use mine in spring for the rye grass or if i get some rain on hay, that hay i feed my cattle . my thoughts joe

Watch the auctions, you should be able to get one in the range 650.00 to 775.00. My brother let his go at an consignment auction for 725.00 this past spring, it was it in excellent shape.

we have used a tedder rake on bermuda grass hay that has quite a bit of johnson grass in it and it works very well; it is great for hay that has been raked into a windrow and then happened to have been rained on (surely no one has had this happen)!! However, I would not recommend it for alfalfa hay as it shatters the leaves, but for heavy grass hay, it works well. Just my .02. CL

It is a typical hay tedder, I put some units together last summer and tried out one of them as everybody kept saying i need to ted my hay. I did and in my experience I wouldn't have one if you give it to me. I tedder rake thats a different story, but a tedder otherwise no. You will find some love and think it the only way to go thats fine. But it is not the thing to use on straight alfalfa, unless you like stems for your hay. My firm advice to you is TRY ONE FIRST FROM SOMEONE,IF CLOSE YOU COULD USE ONE I SET UP BEFORE YOU BUY. resale value really drops on them also.

I'd agree that you need to be careful with a tedder around alfalfa. Probably shake it up the day after cutting, and then leave it alone. However, I'm not sure what distinction you would draw between a tedder and a tedder/rake. I've got a 254 NH tedder/rake, and it's for sale to the first sucker that comes along. Opps..... I didn't just say that, did I? Been down that road, got the T-Shirt, and the grease stains, and the torch burns, and the massive repair bills. Ain't going back. Now happily do my raking with a Kuhn rake, and looking for a tedder. The other devil will do the tedding till then....

ther units I have done are not designed to do both. The tedder rake appeared to look like it left looser windrow, but I have not actually used one, couple in my area and they really like theirs. I am still staying with large wheel rake
