Looking for a tractor that would give me some more power and put a cover over my head. Being an Oliver and IH guy, I'd like to have a 2255 or a 1586 or similar. Any ideas on what would be the best ideas considering power, cab quietness, easy of working and repair, AC and heat, $, etc.? I know the 2255 would be more expensive to find and repair, but I like them. Thanks for the ideas.

I have never had an engine problem with my 7050 or 7060, but I have always changed the antifreeze every two years which the dealer says will save these engines from electrolisis. That's what kills them. As far as the cabs go these were the quietest in the industry back in their day so I don't believe anyone who says they are noisy unless a cab mount was grounded and needed replacing. My 7060 has over 7800 hrs on it and absolutly never had the power shift touched. The 7050 has the power director which is indestuctable but limited. I had the hydraulic pump shell out once on the 7050 though.

Thanks for all the info guys. I was actually looking at a Case also and forgot to put that on my list. I was wondering about the powershift and how it held up. Seems like a 2390 would be good and the 2590 is a horse. Thanks.

A good 2590 will pull the hinges off he!! ,and as long as the hyd filters are changed every 250 hours no problems .

I like Oliver and IH as much as anyone, but if you want a nice/useable cab tractor the older Deere"s around 150 are fairly cheap as everyone wants them in the 30 hp smaller versions for haying tractors. The 4630"s are really reasonable but some say the 404 was beyond maxed out in them..... ....4640"s with the 466 is a great choice. I like IH, but the tractors in that hp rating have some things I don"t like..... .Most say the 1486"s would get out run in the field by a 1086, and the 1586, although a horse, didn"t have the right gear placement with on 3spds in each range instead of 4. Anyhow, I"d stick with IH or Deere, they seem to have the nicest cabs out of the bunch.

Case has nice tractors with the 70 series....But some don't like the powershifts from a reliability standpoint..... ...Never been around a larger 70, but guys who have the 7/8/9/1070's around here really like them.

I have had IH 56,66,86 models kept a couple 06 around yet.But for the size in the 150hp range I really like my 4630 jd quade range tractors.Good cabs and features much better than the ih 86 tractors.

No way no how on the 2255! Had two of them, great power from those Cat's but they were constantly blowing hydraulic oil out every hose on them. Fix the hose and two weeks later fix it again. Couldn't get me in another Allis either. We had a 7045 that wasn't worth a squat. Wouldn't start if it was below 50 and I know two others the same way, one a 7045 and one a 7060. And unless you like loud confined spaces stay outta the cab. Ours threw a rod about 5 years ago with only 5000 hrs and the neighbors 8070 completely shreaded the block last spring. The IH's are decent tractors with the exception of the torque amplifiers going out all the time. Personally I'd opt for a Case 1370 or 1570 or for a bit more cash a 2390 or 2590. They are torque monsters. Easy on fuel and last for ever. Power Shifts seem to scare some off but we change the filters every year and have had very few problems. The 90's have a larger cab and are very easy to get into, very quiet. Starting at about 5K for a good 1370 and 10k for a 2390. Well worth it.

Well there sure is alot to choose from in that catagory. For cheap price, take a look at the Allis Chalmers 7060, those had cab, heat and air, but they were a bit noisy, but for the price, they are a complete steal. Also take a look at White field boss 2-150, 2-155, etc..., usually alittle bit more money than what a 7060 goes for, but they are a cheap tractor too, and I've been in a white 2-155, they are pretty quiet with their Walkesha(sp?) engine. If you want fairly cheap, nice quiet cab, powershift, and 4wd, take a look at an Allis Chalmers 8050 or 8070, those start at around $20,000 for a 4wd one. Agco replacment parts I have found to be reasonably priced.
I have also heard people talk up the 4640 John Deeres, but those will run you considerably more than a 1586, but you do get powershift. Take a look around the net, theres alot of tractors in the around 150hp class.
Hope this helps!,

The 2-135 and 2-155 Whites used the Hercules engine. (478 cu in?) 135 is turboed. 155 has both turbo and aftercooler. Otherwise same tractor.

My neighbor has a 2-135. The tractor pulls like a locomotive. Downside of the Herc is it has a reputation as a fuel hog but is a good cold winter starting engine. I think the Herc is oddball enough that repairs are somewhat costly.

I saw a real nice restored 2-155 sold for $7K a couple years ago. Really a nice tractor for the $$$.

Jon, you posted: "take a look at the Allis Chalmers 7060, those had cab, heat and air, but they were a bit noisy".

There were several 7060's as well as a 7080 in our neighborhood, and I believe every darned one was "a bit noisy" as a rod or two let go and came through the lower part of the engine block.

I know the 7080 did that TWICE, probably 3 times!

In their defense, I will say that the is heavy-tillage, wheatland country, and likely, they WERE being worked to capacity.

Still not the best tractor in the world, if it's gonna have to work hard for a living!

The 7080 had a higher engine speed, that was the reason they didn't last as long, however, if you slowed them down alittle they lasted a long time. The 7060 and the rest of the series are very reliable, and for a price you can't buy a new fancy lawnmower for. They are a bit noisy, the cab was alittle loud even with the factory muffler and ear protection is a very good idea.

Well, I've got nothing against AC's, and have even owned a couple of WC's and a 190XT, but I could direct you to three ex 7060 owners with the "excess ventillation of the block" problem that would probably argue with your "reliable" statement!

And I could show you a few tractors that run just like new, one of them a 7040 with over 7,000hrs on it and the motor has never been apart, neighbor has a 7040 and that one has been real reliable to him, a 7060 in the area is still going strong but I have no clue how many hours is on it. All these folks have kept them for many years and done alot of farming with them. If they were junk, they wouldn't hang onto them and I have yet to see one with a thrown rod, they all run real nice. I think you'll find they took a screwdriver to the pump on those your talking about.

You need to re-read your own post, Jon. You reference 7040's and one 7060. The AC426 engine was notorious for lower end problems in higher HP applications. 7060, 7080 and 8070 come to mind. They simply would not tolerate being lugged.

I just remembered. A new crank was also being used with a better grind on the radius that helped alot in the 7080 and 8070. Had a 7080 in the shop that broke the nose off, if I remember the dampener pulley was bad though.

I worked at an AC dealership for a few years. Four to be excact. In those four years the only engine we had with a ventilated black was a 301 out of an L combine. The other major engine problem was on a 7040. It looked like someone took a blow torch to the inside of the sleeve. Bad injector caused that. There were more with problems, antifreeze in the oil, that would potentially cause a complete failure like you talk about but when I was there (15 years ago) it was always caught before big trouble. Changing antifreeze every two years can avoid that problem and also we would convince the owners sometimes to return to factory HP. Many 7000 seriers out there running at anywhere from 200 HP to 250 HP.
