Howdy,

Found out yesterday that the dealership where I work has a John Deere 1209 haybine on the lot. I haven't had a chance to walk out and look at it yet. They want $1000 for it. Opinions on these haybines? It has a new quick cut sickle in it as well. Thanks and God bless.

I ran the living sh%t out of a 1209 some years back very dependable machine as long as sickle sharp you could fly thru thick hay I would give it a shot make sure you check out all moving parts well have them hook it up and listen to it run for several minutes .

did a serch for 1209, 23 old answers, the hay bine sounds much better than tedder.every things a risk.check it out read all you can.here in texas you got 5 months to chech it out, if some one buys it before then then check them out as to why whay wanted it.custom hay baling does not happen over night, take your time and work up to it slowly,as your time lets you.side note pulled a nh 469 hay bine out of fence row last summer after 15 years and did last cutting with it.

I have a 1219, almost the same thing from my understanding, and we use it in Bermuda grass. Love it. It's a very rare occasion when I get a plug (maybe 2-3 times all last season). My 2 cents.

The JD has a higher raise between sickle and rollers than other models that is why they plug easier. Dirt piles make them plug more for this reason also.

Howdy Dave,

I raise alfalfa and orchard grass so that would be even better for me. Do they have any problems with plugging in hvy alfalfa? Thanks and God bless.

I myself have a NH 488 haybine with the regular sickle and guards, and works great in fine hay or alfalfa. I had a combine bean head with the quick cut sickle and it didn't work good if you had some grass in the beans, this was way back before RR beans.

Probably a good machine, but one thing that would chase me off is that it has the quick cut sickle. They are good in alfalfa, but in fine grass--forget it, especially if they get a bit worn or if the guards are not perfect. Good Luck, and Merry Christmas.

My brother used to have a 1209, he didn't like it, as it plugged all the time in fine grass. He put all new hold downs, guards and a new sickle in it, but it didn't make any difference. We don't really have much alfalfa in our area, so I couldn't say how it would perform there.

He got a 479 New Holland to replace the 1209 and hasn't had a problem in fine grass since.
