My wife talked me in to getting a new ref, and stove. Nothing wrong with the old ones. The new appliances haven't arrived yet, and she is already saying, with the new appliances the counter tops will look bad, we may need counter tops, then new cabnets. To me this is like taking a perfectly good engine out of a my tractor and rebuilding it. Why do women always need to be changing things? Stan

We live in an old farmhouse - vintage 1860s-70s. I decided to replace the windows in the kitchen. Decided I might as well replace the door also. Found the sill under the door wasn't too good, so I replaced it, also. Siding didn't look so good after all that, so it got replaced. Decide that since I had to trim the windows inside, it would be a good time to insulate the walls. Took down all the interior wall surface on two walls, insulated, then drywalled those. Ran some new wiring while I was doing that. New walls/doors/windows on two sides made the rest look shabby... Tore out the cabinets, counter, and sink. Decided it was probably a good time to remove the old chimney that wasn't used anymore and free-up some space on one wall. Removed it, patched in the slate roof so it looks good and sheds water. Put several hours into patching the ceiling and fixing some cracks. Got the idea to relocate the sink to a spot about 3 feet from where it had been and open up part of one wall into the office area. That accomplished, the idea struck that since there'd never be a better time to work on the floor, I leveled it some, and put down new subfloor and tiles. Painted the whole room. Installed new cabinets, counterspace, and sink. Did lots of wiring and plumbing. Decided the kitchen really needed three more circuits, so I ripped out the old electrical panel and put in a new 200 amp box, meter base, and down-feed from the lines to the house.
At this point, there is NOTHING in the kitchen that isn't new EXCEPT the stove and refrigerator.
There still isn't any inside trim on the windows, and I'm not starting ANY new projects until there is!

I know what you mean...Yesterday, Wife came home with a big new plasma TV. I couldn't see anything wrong with had I had been watching. Now we've got a room that looks like it has a drive-in movie screen.

Good thing the Wife and I came to an agreement years ago. When we got married, I sat her down and told her exactly what I wanted to see. I wanted to see: A clean house, dishes washed, hot meal on the table, no unneeded purchases, etc.
Well, the next day I couldn't see anything. On the second day, still couldn't see anything.
Finally...on the third day, the swelling went down enough that I could see a little out of one eye. Just enough so that I could make myself a sandwich.
You know, life has been pretty good since then.

Merry Christmas to all...

Before you take delivery of the appliances. Make certain you get a fridge with the freezer on the bottom instead of the top. I'll never go back to a fridge where the unhandy bottom 1/3 is filled with what looked like "abandoned science experiments".

So, Buick, your wife doesn't bend over and check out the bottom of the fridge either?

Mrs. buickanddeere stands 6ft 1 inch tall in her stocking feet. It's a long way down to the bottom shelves. I used to get down and search for fridge suprises about once a week or when bored as she couldn't be bothered. Kids busted my nose one day while I was searching for abandoned organic matter. I was down on my knees looking in when one kid jumped on my back then the 2nd hopped on as well. Then I was then down on three legs and reaching stuff on and off the bottom shelves. About the time I was swinging the door shut a 3rd kid jumped on my back and head. He forced my nose down and inline with the edge of the rapidly approaching fridge door. Crunch and I could hardly see through the tears. I did get my nose straightened out reasonably well when it was still numb. Decided right then and there that d*m fridge was on it's way out.

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago.....

Wife needed a new stove as I had repaired the old one several times..... .wound up spending several thousand on appliances...Top of the line Kitchen aid....stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, vent-a hood..... ..Countertops were bright yellow and wern't much money so we replaced the countertops....which then required a new sink, and oh, by the way, if were adding a new sink shouldn't we get new facuet? I hate plumbing....

After that we replaced the cabinet doors, added crown molding to the top of the cabinets, and built new drawers (I did get a dovetail jig to do this)to go with the new drawer fronts....Bought the doors and drawer front at local salvage store. They were seconds but I can't find anything wrong with them and they look new....the most expensive one was $12....so, 22 cabinet doors, and then the 12 drawer fronts.....so, honey, if your building new drawers, how about the european slide rails so the drawers open and close nice? Yep....got those too....Then is was " That old hardware just won't look right with the new cabinet doors, so now it was all new handles and knobs.....these cost as much as the new doors and drawer fronts!

Then had to build a new island with bigger cabinets for the new stove to fit in as "The old island is just to small".

So, $13,000 and all my labor for a couple of months and she hasn't mentioned remodeling the kitchen again.....

I will admit, it does look a lot better, and the wife is happy and that's important too.....

I suggest you set your wife a budget to work with and when she runs out of money then that's the end..... ..wish I had!

Now she wants new floor covering! UHHHHH HHH

Hmmmmm.....sounds like you are going to get a new kitchen, if you like it or not. But--get the wife to pay for some of it out of her savings. And make the point that the next thing she wants could (may) not be granted becasue of the expensive kitchen.

When my wife decided her kitchen needed a face lift I took the old stuff and set up a kitchen in the shop. Which is heated of course. My thought was when we throw a little hunt club get together it would work good.
Now she has decided that canning gets done in the shop.

I think my wife needs numerous good tools in kitchen just like I do in my shop. Seems essential for equal partners.

Just be careful where you step and all, don't do or say anything that'll get you sleepin in the barn. May not seem like a bad idea now, but aint fun when you're out there huggin hay.

A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden, he said out loud, "Lord, grant me one wish." Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said, "Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The man said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over anytime I want." The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me." The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say 'nothing', and how I can make a woman truly happy." The Lord replied, "Do you want lights on that bridge?"
