I am an Ebay seller and have been hired to sell a miniature Caterpillar D-4 R Model tractor. It was made in 1932 for Caterpillar dealers and only 4 were made. This is supposed to be the only one left in existence. I'm just trying to verify my client's story as I am not a tractor enthusiast or collector. This tractor has a 1/2 horse briggs and stratton engine and is made to fully function. I have photos for those that would like to see it. Just email me and I'll send them along. I would also appreciate it if you would spread the word that this is going up for auction on Ebay in the next few days. Thanks very much,
Mack

I hope to have it listed on Ebay tonight. It should be easy to find with a general search or you can search by seller. My seller ID is mackthebulldog324. Thanks everyone.

It might help if you let the guys over at Acmoc.org know, too.

great pictures! It's something I would have killed for when I was a kid! :)

The decals tell you what era it is. The first D4 appeared in 1936, and the serial number year check on the engine seems to prove this...

I have seen some pedal tractors on ebay of the same design. Dad noted the stamped grill on the front end suggests it was mass-produced. I might assume this might be a powered version of the pedal tractor.

I don't think it really matters what year it was supposed to be this little jewell looks like a gold mine , if it still runs I would start it at 1500-2000 and let it go

Pics of D-4 with Briggs Engine in reply to Mack Edwards, 12-27-2005 16:19:39
Here are a few pics. I've consulted another message board and talked more with the owner. The owner said that he got the story that Caterpillar comissioned another company to make these as premiums for dealerships and only four were made. I believe that the Caterpillar Toy Pedal Tractor was used as the base for this one. It was modified and an engine added. I looked up the serial number on the Briggs engine and it dates to the late 30s right in line with what yall are saying.

The tractor you MIGHT be thinking of is the R4, the gas version of the D4.

However, they did not appear until around 1936. The others are right. It was not until the mid-1930's that Caterpillar stopped naming their models after the horsepower rating. It might be a model Twenty-five, as it resembles a R-4.

Pictures would help a lot.

You might call Larry Maasdam in Clarion Iowa. He is very well versed in Caterpillars.

You might want to check further on this. I don't believe Cat used the D- designation as early as 1932, they called their tractors Twenty, Thirty, Sixty, etc depending on the HP. They didn't start calling their tractors D-4, D-7, etc. until 1940 or so. That mini tractor might be a neat item in its own right, but I dont believe it was authentic.
