Folks, this is beginning to be a real problem. My wife would like to get a puppy, preferably a Maltese or a Toy Poddle, but they are way too expensive. Do any of you folks know a backyard breeder where I can get one cheaper? I'd like to stay under about $400. I can travel to NJ, PA, NY, MD, and DE. Thanks, Dan.

My wife is a breeder, groomer, handler trainer.Has been doing it for 25yrs and yes we have a "backyard".Where the puppies are bred at and raised does not determine what quality of dog you will get. What you definitely want to stay away from is "puppie mills" and "pet stores"No matter where you get a dog or how much you pay for it will not determine any guatantees on the quality of the dog.My wife has dogs from free up to $2500.00.She also very strict morals and rules on whom she breeds to.Breeding dogs is a very complicated bussiness which I dont know much about. Most breeders that are into showing dogs will breed for a lifetime looking for that one special dog that will take them to the top.Im might braggin a bit here but this weekend my wife is going to the Eukanuba Classic in Tampa,Fla. with one of the best dogs she has bred in the last 25 yrs. This show is the creme of the crop. You cant even enter, like Westminster you have to be invited. She will be showing a Hairless Chinese Crested in the toy group. She has to beat 11 other Cresteds Sat. afternoon,if she does she will be on Tv Sat. night live.Well I know I got off topic here a bit but Im just real proud of her, shes worked her butt off to get to this point.Anyways when you look for your dog youll know when you find the right one.Just look at the surroundings where the dog is being raised,That tells you alot.If your gonna spend a good chunk of cash on a dog,get refferences from previous buyers.
Good Luck
Stan

My wife just had the same bright idea ! We allready have an outside dog. I really didn't think she needed a puppy to try and train. It takes alot of time that she really doesn't have. The money issue was the only thing saving me from having puppys. She kept checking the local pound and even got on a waiting list for them to call her if a poodle came in. One day the called someone just dropped one off. She flew up there and snatched him up. We still can't figure out why they got rid of him ? Very well behaved and very well house trained.Acts more like a cat to me kinda jumpy and nervous. She is the first to admit NOW that she was glad not to have to mess with a puppy. But of course I was "nuts" for suggesting it before. LOL

We, and in particular my wife, are very happy with our Bichon Frisé. Cost $400 in our country (The Netherlands) but I know they are pretty popular in the US too, so price may vary from this figure. Bichon will fit her lap nicely. FWIIW, hendrik

As to the maintenence costs of purebred vs. mixed, I'm here to tell ya it can go either way. I've had pure Lab and Shepard that got along on just rabies shots and heartworm pills 'til they keeled over at well aged. Now I've got Goldie ( a four way cross) who managed to make me think it was my fault she caught that pickup.

That underwater treadmill was a wonder of modern veterinary billing. Worth it, though. Five years later she's still going strong.

I've got to toss a vote in for the Chihuahua. Probably hard to find a "backyard breeder" with quality, but like old tractors...you usually get what you pay for. Good luck with your decision.

My swmbo insisted we had to have a dog. I do (did) not like the idea of being tied down. If We want to take off somewhere, now what do you do with the dog? Anyway, She had her way, and with my allergies, She bought a Lhasa Apso. (A small 12lb. guard dog originally from Tibet.) They are white, soft , fluffy and the easiest dog to be around I have ever seen. No messes, house trained right away, and knows his place. He does not jump up on people, and if there is a stranger around, he lets you know. I guess if you HAVE to have a dog, this is a good choice. John L.

Thanks to all who replied. I guess I wasn"t as clear as I should have been, this is her dog, I already have one. We have three teenager boys and she would like something that still fits in her lap. We had seen a Maltese in a pet store and she fell in love with it. I guess I"ll just keep looking Thanks again, Dan. PS you guys are the best.

BEWARE OF BACK YARD BREEDERS!!!! We bought an AKC registered toy poodle from a backyard breeder several years ago when we lived in California, and ended up spending $1,000+ on surgery to correct a congenital deformation in the knees on her hind legs. According to the Vet, this happened as a result of someone breeding dogs that are too closely related.

We currently live SE of Denver, and my wife bought another registered toy poodle at a local pet store (NOT a chain) for about what your're wanting to spend that turns out to be a very healthy & (for a toy poodle anyway) well mannered dog. You might check to see if there's a club in your area; someone there might know of a source that's careful about inbreeding.

Was raised with farm dogs, never had a good idea of their background or breading. From a health standpoint a mongrel can be expected to be better than the purebred. This is because there is more inbreeding in a purebred which strengthens any health weakness. The inbreeding also strengthens other characteristics; physical and social which are important to some people because they think they know what to expect. As a married urbanite when “she” wanted a dog I checked a couple books out of the library which helped me with breed selection and other aspects. You may have heard it before “get an owners or service manual”, same thing. Our easy breed choice has been Boston Terriers. They are sure not for everyone but are really great companion animals, very trainable and super with kids. With dogs, like tractors one color or size does not fit all. I read an article recently which indicated one should expect a dog to absorb $12,000 in costs and upkeep. I know personally people in an urban setting to spend that much and more, medical being the largest category. Go for it but not on just a whim. Think of it as a long term thing.

I just lost my " little Buddy " Duster.. A twelve year old Maltese. We did nearly everything together. When I went out on service calls with my F-600 service truck , he was on my lap. We went on rides to pick-up parts , he was on my lap.I probably won't get another one . I would probably be comparing them.. Not good..I found a site you should check out.. Maltese Rescue.com They are from the N.Y. area..serving a tri-state area..Good Luck..

I would reccomend getting a boxer or an akita. We have had 2 boxers one we still have and they have been some of the best dogs we have ever had. We also had an akita whick jus died about a week before christmas and it was the most loyal dog. If you want a family/inside dog you ought to go with a boxer. If you want an outside farm dog you should have an akita.

Black lab, German sheppard, Blue heeler, My best friend. Wise words TV. Been around litterally thousands of dogs. The biggest hearts and the lowest maintenence bills are muts. There are a lot of easily adopted dogs at the rescue shelters too.

I bought my wife a Min-Pin (miniature pincher)Great dog, but don't do it, you'll find yourself cleaning up after it, feeding it, and doing all the walking.

if you want to get her a loyal dedicated dog get a blue heeler. i got my forst one about 30 years ago and love them. the males are more one person, but nobody will mess with anyone in your family if its around.
i had a male that was 6 when i married my ex, she had been around him since he was a puppy, but when she moved in he would stay between us all the time. I should have listened to him

My Daughter and Son-in-Law had a Blue Healer Mix left over from when my Grandson moved out. He became very protective of Sandy, and would nip at Joe when he got close to her. He is gone now.
