I have been trying to figure out a way to add an external hard drive on my computer.

I am running Windows Me (worst operating system ever)with USB 1.1 port

High speed USB 2.0 controller is not present or available with Windows Me.

All the drives available require a USB 2.0 port and at the same time they all say Windows Me is acceptable.

Anyone got a clue?

Thanks,

Rex

Thanks guys, my concern is the device manufacturer specifications states a 2.01 USB port is required.

I understand that it should work on a 1.0 USB port but not sure since they require it. I have emailed the manufacturer and inquired about this but have'nt received a reply yet.

One reason I stated Windows Me is the worst ever is because I have had two 80 gig hard drives to crash on this computer, does not have USBSTOR.SYS, will not support my HP scanner with ADF, and other issues over the past 4 years.

The only reason I don't upgrade is because most of my software would require upgrading also and that ain't an option right now.

I guess I will wait and see what the manufacturer (Maxtor) says.

Thanks,
Rex

Do you have firewire (i-link)? If so, I believe the Maxtor One Touch II can use it instead of the USB. I have a desktop system that has WinME with a firewire card installed for a video camera, so I know it will support firewire. You should be able to get the card cheap and they can be easily installed.

ME can be a little buggy when compared it to my XP laptop. Just go through and make sure all OS, BIOS and software programs have all patches and upgrades installed.

What software do you think will not work on a newer OS?

I have Windows XP on both my computers and have installed Microsoft Office 98 on both of them and had no problems. I even run a DOS desktop dyno program on my laptop...

Which version Autocad? I run AcadLT97 on WinXP (home version) and have no problems whatsoever. I believe Acad R12 would also work. I have not seen a program yet that will not work on XP, except for certain DOS-only programs like XTPro which were created before long filenames came into being.

Hi Dixiland,

XP comes with a folder named Supportools just for this very reason. It has a self installer.

Any drive can be used as a external HDD. I bought the external USB driver case and use a old Maxtor drive in it. The driver case, can be used for any type of hardware including floppy's and comes with drivers for USB1.0 and 2.0 They automaticaly switch between the two as the device needs. Although not a speed demon like C drive, it's a 100 times better than CD or DVD.

The new fluid HDD are very quite running and well worth the money.

I use XP Home with SP2 with NO anti-virus and in over 2yrs have yet to have any problems, however I do use the XP SP2 firewall with a user account for logging on the net. The user account has no admin powers.

The way I understand it, the USB 2.0 equipment should be reverse-compatible with USB 1.1 equipped computers.

I hope so anyway, because I just ordered a jump-drive that is USB 2.0 and the auction said it should work with 1.1...

Hi,
Your usb 1.1 should work just fine with a 2.0 usb drive. The 2.0 is backward compatible. the plugs are identical. The only thing that happens is the 2.0 drops down to 1.1 speed. Hope this helps and good luck.

#1.) I am running Windows ME on the computer I am typing this on, and find nothing wrong with it. It gives FAR less flaky problems than 2 computers we have XP PRO on. In what way do you find it to be the worst version ever? I suspect it's more of a motherboard issue than a Windows ME issue that a USB 2.0 port is not available... likely your motherboard was made before the USB2.0 standard was written.

#2.) I am not absolutely sure this will solve your problem, but have you looked into getting a USB 2.0 card for the 'puter. The price is right, too!

Windows ME was the last version of Windows that was build on top of DOS. I don't think Microsoft put their best engineering and testing into it since XP was already on the way.

Because it was build on DOS, 98 and XP had many limitations... not multi-threading, etc. It's major noticeable limitation was a poor graphics interface and limited graphics memory. It also used the old way of recognizing hardware devices. You had to be a magician to add new hardware to the system sometimes.

Most of the bad rap with ME came from people who found it less stable than Windows 98SE. Stuff that used to work fine on 98 would crash miserably on ME.

XP-SP2 can be very-very stable when used with a good firewall (and a user who isn't downloading a lot of viruses and garbage programs).

Third line of previous post should read...

Because it was built on DOS, 98 and ME had many limitations...

Sorry.

I'm no help, except to tell you I am running XP pro with all updates and I still can't get USB 2, only 1. All the USB 2 devices I run will work on version 1..just slower. No, I havn't tried HD ones though.

I use an external hard drive for a backup device. When I first started all I had was USB 1. The problem with USB 1 is it's very, very, slow..... With USB 2, doing a full backup of 14gb takes about 40 minutes. Getting USB 2 working gives a huge performance increase.

I suggest you plan on upgrading away from ME at some point in the future..... .
