i have two different questions here.

One is about a ford 600 serie tractor with one of those homemade 4 wheel drive front ends. well in the spring i should have the chance to get one for arounda grand but its got a busted axel in the front we have another front end for it but is there anyway to know that the axles the same short of pulling it out and if its not how hte heck do ya find the right one. also how hard is it to find the origianl front end that woulda been on that tractor to begin wiht and how costly is one?

My second question is i should also have hte cahnce to buy an oliver hg cletrac for 250 bucks but the engine needs rebuilt. no big deal right but how much would that set me back just to have it rebuilt. and then would anything possible be wrong withteh brakes if it sat say for 10 years or more.

let me know what you guys know cause right now on both of these deals im basically like how fast can i get it to my house. thansk in advance fellas

In regard to the Cletrac HG. I've "repaired" many of the Hercules engines for under $200 - it all depends on how beat it is. Last one I did was set-up when I got it. I regrooved the pistons, put in new rings with repair shims, and did a valve job. The bearings and bore were fine. I had less than $200 into it when done. If the crank is bad, or you need new pistons and a rebore - that's a whole different story - but often is not the case. The steering brake bands are cheap - you can buy them from a Cletrac dealer like Zimmerman or right over the counter from Case. In most situations though, they don't wear out - they just get plugged from use of the wrong gear oil. Modern GL-5 oil uses several EP additives that plug the brake bands up. Usually, all you have to do is flush the transmission out, but the correct non-EP oil in, and run it for awhile - and often they start to work again.

in all effect the engine is not bolted to hte cletrac as we speak its just loose in there. and would there be a manual anywhere to tell an ammature how to do the work you described? otherwise any clue how much a place like that zimmermans would want to redo the engine? im in pa so the drive is just a fact of life. but now im also trying to remember if the guy said that theres a different motor in it like out of a car i hope thats not hte case. but would it be a good investent to buy even if the engine is beyond what i would feel comfortable with repairing myself. i would assume that i could in fact if i had to sell it off and make money on the deal. am i correct ?

So I take it you have 2 Elenco front axles. 1 on the tractor and 1 spare unit.
What a find.

Come over to the Ford board of this site and do a search for a guy named Tony Jacobs. You can e-mail him from one of his post as he always has a e-mail link.
Tony owns Elenco and can give you any and all info you need about the set up. He lives in Mass.

By the way this is not a homemade set up but rather a after market add on.

If you are talking about the Elenco front axle, That was not a home made unit. The front axle is a Dodge Powerwagon front axle with either 4-88 or 5-89 gears, It was narrowed 11". It will be hard to find another axle like the Elenco to fit with out alot of work. I have the spindles for the orginal 2 wheel drive.

see thats what i was wondering. right now this is my uncles tractor. and hes inquired to dealerships about the front 4 wheel on it and was told it was off a dodge pickup. now mind you this guy never actually saw it but still he gave us the other front for it cause he said he had no use for it. this was all before we believe the axle snapped. since then my uncle has parked the tractor and bought a jd midsize with a front loader and back bucket. now im starting to wonder if in fact we couldnt just take teh front thats on it off and put the other one on. i hadnt thought of that before. but now that im thinking how big of a jack would i need to jack that up and then id obviously block the tractor up but how big do i need to get it off the ground? thanks fellas

Can't help with the ford. The cletrac, if you do the work on the engine your looking at $500-1500 for parts depending on how far in you need to go. Thats a very good price for it by the way. All the ones I have found cost around $750-1500 and thats not running. Theres only one place I know of for parts for that cletrac also Zimmermans out in PA.
