OT: Pickup beds with folding sides?

Howdy, ya'll.
I've seen pickup beds with folding sides in use on little diesel pickups in Africa. Anyone know if these were ever available here in the States? The tailgate folded down like a normal tailgate, then both sides would fold down all the way, too, to give a perfectly flat bed. The sides and tailgate were latched 'up' with simple hitch pins. The whole bed rode up higher than a normal bed (to get over the wheel wells, I reckon. They weren't pretty, but they sure looked useful.

Thanks,
Darren

Darren,
Have you ever seen the truck they rent at Home Depot? It has an aluminum bed with sides about a foot tall that fold down. Very nice set up. No idea who makes them for them though. third party image
And as for the old VW trucks some others mentioned here, they are really neat and quite handy but they won't haul much weight and I doubt you will find many around anymore. third party image
Good luck!

Thanks, those are outstanding pics!

The Home Depot truck looks very similar to the trucks I saw in Africa, though they were a good bit smaller. I'll have to swing by HD and see if I can find a sticker or plate on their truck's bed.

Got a Crysteel dump bed we put on an F350 years ago. We got one with the curbside (RH)that folds down and so does the rear. They did make them with both sides that fold. Very handy and sturdy it won't fall apart like factory truck beds.

I"ve seen Volkswagon pickups built as you descripe. They were imported and sold by VW dealers in this country. Bed was higher too because of the rear engine. Don"t see many of them any more, they were popular in the 50"s and 60"s. I think the only survivors have been in storage someplace, or are restored. When we moved from apartment to our house, I borrowed one from work. For moving, with the drop sides that was the handiest thing I ever used. Delbert from Lincoln.

depending on what mood I happened to be in I would either go home or stay and bid like the family wasn't there.

Volkswagen had sides like that on their pickup version of the transporter van. I see one around here once in a while. I have even seen one on the later body style . I do not think they were imported for sale but were brought in by individuals. We had one at work when I worked for a VW dealer. It was our parts runner truck. Even had an extended cab before anyone in the US built an extended cab.

I built one for my 79 ford just like you described not to hard to build with right equipment. I use it for my fencing truck and every thing is easy to reach off of the sides or back my sides are only about 8" high so I don't fold the sides down as often as I thought I would. Bout the only time I do is for over sided items I want to haul. I like it real well.
