Hi Guys,

Got up this morning, rechecked all those lug nuts again, checked the oil, fixed a Neutral Saftey switch that has been botherin' me for some time and suddenly realized that this old sow is completely and totally done.

So, since it was such a pretty day here, I jumps on the old sister and go fer a 30 mile tractor ride. Picked up the baler out at the farm and drug 'er in here so's I can get it up to snuff before spring gets here.

The old tractor runs and operates just like a new one. However, two things:

I don't think I like those small tires on the back and doubt if I'll ever get used to that darned gas engine. It sounds like a car! :>)

On my Hydro 70, the factory tires were 15.5x38s. I put a set of 15.5x38R2 on a second set of rims to play better in the mud. The only problem that this senario presented was that those tires should have been sold with a gift certificate good at the auto parts store for at least 50 feet grade 70 half inch tow chain. One half turn with those tires when you were not moving and instantly jacked up on the frame. The D312 had enough power to handle the larger diameter tires. When the 15.5x38s were worn, I installed a set of 16.9x38s, thinking that if abit bigger was good , that more was better..... After one short year those 16.9ers found a new home on a 706-310er. A much better match. Then being only SLIGHTLY humbled, I had a set of 14.9x38s installed on the H70. Now this was a proper match. The ricers were no longer used as there were bigger tractors to do the tillage ( with bigger R2 tires and heavier, longer tow devices....). These 14.9 tires were a perfect fit. With 7.50x16 fronts the tractor no longer had that donehill slant. The 312 was a good match for the added traction and increased road speeed. I purchased a F656D that had widened rims and 18.4x38 tires. These were too much tire for the rear end and the motor. I had to rebuild the transmission and the differential of the tractor. After that operation (both on the tractor and my wallet) I installed 15.5x38s on the 656. With 6.50x16, the tractor was sitting level. A slight adjustment to the governer on the 282 and the transport speed (lack of) problem was corrected. I would be hesitent to install any tire larger than 14.9x38 on your tractor. I think that it would be too much and would remove the performance/snappiness from the unit. Also with a Hydro transmission, there appears to be more load on the powertrain. Just my opinions and experiences on the best liked tractor that I had.

Red,

That was my thinking too. Never owned a 14.9 before, but I sure think that would be the perfect sized tire for this little guy.

Thanks,

Allan

Hi Gary,

I've been kinda agonizing over this haying deal ever since last summer.

My problem is that I've got a business to run here at the house and I just don't have a lot of "extra" time to waste and have really been wondering how I'm gonna get that 100 acres of alfalfa put up in a timely manner next summer. All by myself, yet.

That was the real reason why I bought the little hydro in the first place; so that I don't have to be swappin' tractors around.

I'm gonna put the hydro on the swather, the baler on the 966, then I'll mount that DuAl loader and rear bale mover both on the 686. That way, I should be able to scoot around pretty good without any "lost" time.

'Sides, I'm not so sure that the Hydro70 could handle that baler, could it? That joker makes a pretty good sized bale.

Allan,

Which pulls harder, swather or baler? Got late,1st cutting alfalfa getting stemy. Hooked my 706 ger. to neighbors 14ft. Hesston swather. 4&low,TA up. Rated pto speed gave me 5mph. Nice load for the old kraut.Neighbor baled with Oliver 1655 and Vermer baler making 1000lb.bales. Our loaders wouldnt handle larger bales safely. So,I would think the hydro would handle the baler.

You don't have to tell if you don't want but what business do you run? Just wondering because of time commitment. You must sell hay or do you feed it all.

Hi Gary,

We run an on-line medical contracting business, which is pretty much 24/7 (We didnt' plan it that way). :>(

We'll be buying heifers in the spring to take care of the grass in our pastures. Then of course, we'll need the hay for their winter feed.

Somtimes those little part time jobs turn out to be a fulltime job. I do alittle electrical work onthe side. Sometimes its more than I want. How many heifers? I run a 80 cow herd and sell the calves as feeders at about 800#.But about 40 acres of alfalfa and 50 acres of pasture is enough feed for them along with corn stalks.

I'm hoping the place will support maybe 30 head of cows. We don't get a lot of rain out here, so one cutting is all we can count on; if even that.

Want to move a lot of bales quickly? Check out the New Idea mover in current Farmshow. Chain loader on the front, truck frame with chains mounted alongside. Moves 7 at a crack. Almost makes me wish I had hay again!

Hey Allan you got that seat all tilted and covered in plastic like it's going to rain or something? lol. I've been watching your progress on here and the tractor sure looks sharp now. Yep, that's a great baler and we use to have 848 or 849.

Hey Allan,

Is that an 848 behind that tractor? If I recall that is one of the best baler's that New Holland ever built. It doesn't have the capacity of the 855, but is a great baler. I worked for New Holland prior to joining the service.

later days mate,
Jim
