A friend at work just redone the head on his 1989 s-10 because the head gasket blew. Now it is all back together and he took it for a test drive (3 miles ) put it back in the shop raised the hood to check for leaks and the exhaust manifold was glowing red where number 2&3 come together. I tod him that his catalytic converter was probably plugged so he had a pipe made to replace it, took it out for another drive ( 3 miles ) and the same thing. He said the plugs look clean and no smoke out the pipe, claims the timing is ok, I am not sure where to tell him to look, Anyone have any ideas? Thanks William

 Re: O/T - Custom Spraying in reply to John (C-IL), 03-20-2006 10:10:02
Umm... I beleive the equipment the Co-op has would be reletively modern. From how I understand as I was told, I would be the only sprayer operator. However, they do have other people operating Terra-Gators, etc.
I realize that the hours can be kind crappy as you have to spray when the weather allows, but i really dont mind, because, as you said, the pay can be decent. Also, from what I hear, if I am a decent worker, I would also be doing a little trucking during slow times.
And what does the word 'synergistic' mean? I have never heard it before.

Thanks for your input and expertice.

I've been a custom applicator and operator for 25 years. It can be the most rewarding job you can ever have and can also be the worst. The hours are terrible, but the pay is usually pretty decent.

Equipment is the key. If you have outdated and worn out equipment the job can be a nightmare. If you are running good modern equipment with the latest technology it can be a blast.

I have also found that if your company has several sprayers and operators it can be a very synergistic situation. If you are the onlt horse in the stable it can be a drag.

A good seasoned operator will earn from $35,000 to $50,000 per year here. A rookie that needs some training will start around $20,000 to $25,000 but will advance rapidly if he is any good.

That could be normal. I was pulling a trailer one night and when I got out to do something I decided to pop the hood. They are really noticiable at night! Same thing when I didn't have a trailer just not quite as red.

William; M E Anthony might have it on the timing answer. That engine doesn't use a heat-riser.When you fellas set the ign timing, did you jumper terminals A&B at the ALDL connector first? Set it at 8 degrees BTDC? Cloged fuel filter could be causing engine to run lean & hot also.Let me know if you have any questions. ~brad

If you're sure the timing is correct, I'd check the valve in the exhaust pipe(the vacuum-operated one; supposed to help the engine warm up faster). Can't think of the name of it now. If it still has one. I had an older Chevy with a 350. This valve was located between the manifold outlet and the crossover pipe. Valve was rusted shut. Took me a little bit to figure out why one side turned red and the other one didn't.

JD,

That's the one with the steel manifold, right?

Tell him to put that heat sheild back on, so he can't see it. :>)
