MTD trans slipping in third gear

Hello, I recently bought an older MTD 36" tractor. It has the 5-speed, "real transmission" not the variable belts thing. What is happening is that the tractor is slipping in third gear. I can feel it slow down when under load. If i tap on the clutch slightly, it seems to catch itself and then begins to slip again.
The other gears work properly and it is not difficult getting it into or out of gear.
Is this a linkage adjustment problem or an internal transmission problem? Thanks in advance for your help, everyone!!

If clutching changes things the drive belt might not be slipping in 3rd gear.

I've never seen this on a MTD but the shift linkage on some of the Murrays with the shift lever in the right fender binds in certain gears (3rd, 4th, 5th.) and then the belt doesn't get tight enough to pull properly.

I had a mower with a Peerless transaxle that slipped in third gear. I had to take the transaxle apart and put in new shift keys I think is what the part was called. It might be you would need third gear too. These keys connect the shaft to the gear of choice. Yours may be totally different.

Hello
I'm trying to fix a gearbox from a Westwood T1800, The Shift keys, little strips with lumps on end on input shaft, how to take old ones out and put new ones in?
Many Thanks
