I am going to buy some cows this week or next. I have a fescue pasture that they will be on. What are any of you guys feeding for a supplement on fescue pastureand what do you figure it costs per cow or tub?

Rob

I feed mine hay and if they start dropping weight I feed them 20% protein pellets. They have plain white salt and a mineral block year round. In March I fertilize half of my farm ( these are pure fescue ). I started feeding them free choice high minerals today to prevent grass tetany.

Rob,

I live in Middle Tennessee and have a small herd of black Angus cattle that I run on fescue pastures. I supplement their feed with some 12% cattle feed each day, but I do it primarily to draw them into the barn yard so I can look them over and get them accustomed to my being around them.

The only other absolute necessity for them is that the they have minerals. In the late winter and early spring, the minerals have to be supplemented with magnesium. Around here, early fescue is deficient in magnesium and some cows can develop a life-threatening disease called grass tetany if they are deficient in magnesium.

There's lots more to raising cattle than just what kind of grass they eat, but as far as this one issue, I'd just say talk to the locals about the need for high magnesium minerals in the early Spring.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Plain white salt block and bag of mineral with fescue equalizer, free choice. Lasts a long time. Never had any problems either. Harley
