Mornin' All,

I'm gonna go hook 'er up today; might even take time to check the oil in the old tractor.

Gotta move two stacks of hay first and then perhaps we can get this season started. :>)

Wow Allan, can you bring that down tomorrow? And yeah, the buffaloe ain't a bad idea. I think it would work real good here in the canyons. Either wild cows or buffaloes and charge a hefty fee to hunt and shoot one. Provide all butchering services so the customer leaves his hunt with the frozen meat.

Howard,

I wanna come down to your plowday so bad I can taste it, but the "powers that be" tell me I gotta keep workin' if I wanna eat. :>(

Heck yeah, we could "summer range, winter range" this buffalo thing if you'd wanna take the winter shift. :>)

Look at ol' Ted Turner puttin' all that real estate back into the 1800s. :>)

Oh heck,

I'm just "play farmin'". This particular place is 320 acres.

When the wife tells me to "Go outside and play", this is where I go. If I had to do it for a living, I'd probably, no, wrong choice of words, I know I'd have a whole competely different attitude. :>)

Just don't see how those big boys do it.

How much plowing is still being done in your neck of the woods? I thought you guys were all direct seeders. I still fall plow out here in Idaho but the move is toward direct seeding. I just can't justify the price for a drill and the horse power to pull one. Besides, I like to plow!

I'm with you!

I will never, ever trade my pride to go no-til or crawl in bed with the devil just so I can indirectly work for the machinery/chemical companies.

Just cannot imagine what that feels like to be tryin' to meet a payment on a down payment. :>(

If this doesn't work, I'll plant the whole derned place to grass and turn it over to 40 head of buffalo and just let 'em have their way with it. :>)

Hmmm, dont know what to say. I feel particularly "rightious" after I raise another successful no-till crop. I think I would have to hang my head in shame if I plowed and disced my soils into the winds and the rivers.

I'm not wanting to start anything here but are you saying that if you no-till you are selling your soul and giving your money to a chemical company and machinary company? Hmmm. Wouldn't spending a lot more on fuel be giving your money to some towelhead or camel jockey? And what about all those shins, shares, and landsides you have to replace? That probably goes to China doesn't it? Now I respect your posts here and we all have our opinions but no-till isn't such a bad idea.

Good Mornin Allan!

Now how in the world did you get those boards to shine like that? I'm plowin tough red Ohio clay and mine don't shine that pretty. ha ha. It is that time of year though and the plowin is great here. It was goin pretty nice yesterday until the little breakdown. Made a round and noticed the plow pullin a little harder. Made it back aruond and found my trailing wheel layin in the furrow. It didn't seem to phase the old JD R too much though. Nice thing is that we had all the parts to replace the bearings and seals that got anihilated here at work ( one of the perks for workin at an IH dealership). It's raining here this morning and probably will this afternoon so that'll give me a break to put in the new parts toinight and then take to the field again tomorrow. Can't beat plowin. God bless.

OFF,

This darned thing better not give me any grief this year or it'll get parked out in the trees.

I know right where there is half a dozen Massey 4-18 spinners settin' and I could have one settin' here in the yard in half a day.

Darned IH plows just plain pull hard compared to those Masseys! :>(

Yep, fill 'er up with fuel at 2.50 a gallon and top off the radiator with distilled water and start watching that money go up in black smoke. Shouldn't take long to get rid of a thousand or two. I'm jealous though, wish I had some acres to turn over. All I got going is a tractor pull this weekend. Not like turning dirt in the field and doesn't last long enough to get the itch satisfied. My 966 is ready and waiting if you run into trouble. Migraine

Just curous, does your ground dry out that fast because the snow you showed and the picture ne.cowman showed with mud a couple days ago,we would be still working that ground till fall if we did any plowing or chiesling that wet now.

Hi Guy,

I'll be working alfalfa/sod that hasn't been turned in 35 years.

I want it so sloppy that I can barley keep the tires from slippin' so I can pull it. Darned stuff had me clear down in 3rd gear last year when I knocked out this little patch.

Got 54 acres of the tough stuff yet to go, then I can get to the "easy" 35 acres of wheat stubble. That part will seem like heaven when I get over there. :>)

3rd??!! What do you have for a trannie?

With my 706 ger. I could pull a 4/16 fast hitch in low 4, TA up, about any where when I was trying to farm. That gave me a good 4.5mph and the plow worked good at that speed.

Play safe steveormary

Yes Sir,

That's the way I'm used to also. But, this ol' briar patch is just an old fashioned stinker. Pulls just like cement.

Hope it goes a little better this year; that's why I wanna get out there early before it starts sappin' all the moisture outta the ground again.

I plowed for the first time last year with a 2 bottom Model 39 (I think) behind my Super M. It pulled real easy in most places but I've got some raspberry bushes that have been there for 20+ years that really made the tractor grunt. Got to plow a bunch of those this year, it'll be interesting to see how the Super M handles larger sections of 'em.

Hey Allen, Is there really an advantage to a rollover plow? When I was farming a hundred years ago first in Michigan and then in GA, we used standard, one way plows. I would guess the advantage is the extra lengths of the fields and the time saved going around the ends of the lands. Oh, and how did you get them so shiny? We used to spray the moldboards and other rustables with a mix of engine oil and kerosine. Worked like a charm. Nice looking rig!!

Mornin' Dave,

Beats me, never been around one of those one-way "circle plows".

However, I can tell ya that in addition to the obvious time savings, the real advantage is that there is no dead furrow; an absolute must if you happen to be on a flood irrigated farm.

Downside is that the spinners are spendy. :>(

I've noticed that this farm I just bought is a good 6 feet higher on the outside edges of the fields due to the use of the one-way plows over the years. It's gonna take me 10 years to straighten this mess back out.

I use a soft centered paint like aluminum, copper coat or flat black to dress the bottoms. It peels right back off in about 3 feet the next season.

Allan I have seen farms where the new guy taking over had to bring in a road grader to clean up the fence rows since the last guy had always thrown it out for the last 25 years .

That isn't the fault of the plow, that is the fault of the guy who was pulling it.

I was taught to always throw the dirt the opposite direction as the previous year. It's easy to do. Even if it's a field you never plowed before, you can usually tell if you look at it a little.

Of course, the guy that taught me to plow is fussier than most about such things, but his fields sure look nice when he is done plowing.

Hi Allan...I had the same problem on a farm we bought. Finally got a pull behind box scraper and in the spring and fall, I'd just set it once, then start making slow circles along the fence row and out a ways into the field. Took a couple of years to finally level it out, but sure worked good for me.We got so much rain here can't even think about field work. But your wind has just arrived and it won't be long at this rate to dry up!
