OK, the ol girl started every time I needed her to this winter (which wasnt often), if plugged in fuel control pulled into that sweetspot, and a good shot of either. I know no one like's ether, me neither, but it wont go with out it, until it's 70 out. It dont use oil, smokes only when first started for about a minute(light blue, white). Now comparing this to other tractors I have had to run the last few days at other farm. older tractors pop right off. ex oliver 1750D and 2050. John deere 4020, farmall 560D and 756D. They seem to spin over faster and pop off right away.I had the starter rebuiilt last fall, have all 00 cables, and 2 new 725CCA batts. Seems to have plenty of power. Injection pump built last fall as well. I am truelly frustrated having to give it either all the time and am afraid of the IH dealer shop $$. Some one recommended adding 'SeaFoam' to the oil and running a can in the next tank of fuel. What do you all think of that and is there anything else I am missing, such as a different RPM starter? Thanks, Dave

Dave on them german engines and like the D361-D407 with age and somebody doing a valve job incorrectly will have and affect on COLD start and also cranking speed . valve protruission or ression can and will change total coperssion along with injectors that are not cracking correctly or if the spray pattren is not as pre spec. also if the cranking pressure of the injection pump is off it will affect cold start. Timming also has and affect So with out covering all the bases it is a guees as to just why yours is not starting like it should and with out spending a BUNCH of money ya can't find the problem a couple broken top rings cna be also the problem and realy not show up till ya just happen to pul the engine apart and find it. Yea i know some help you are .

Yes you are help, thanks. I think when I a finnally break down and buy that next tractor, i am gonna take the ol hydro to the shop and have the engine checked out, maybe even see if there are any updates for that motor. Everything else works great on the tractor, even the hydro, so I may as well see what the inards look like.

Dave,

Is that 239 engine a German? If so, that's just the way they are.

Shucks,

Not going to get into that argument again. However, the Germans only had a compression ratio of something like 15:1.

That's why IH mounted the either cans on 'em to start with; they knew it wouldn't start right cold without a little help. :>)

Hi Jimmy,

It has sure made a believer out of me. I know darned well this little guy pulls every bit as hard as that old 766D that I bought brand spankin' new years ago.

Fact is, I thought I would need another "second tractor", until I put this feller in the field last year. Nice part is, I really like the power in that small framed tractor too.

How in the heck to they get that much pull out of that little engine? Gotta tell ya, I'm really impressed with the Germans.

Allan
