There is a product called POR-15 that is readily available on ebay or many places on the internet. They have a paint that dries to a rock hard finish that is good for rusty metal. It works very good. I just did the underside of my lawnmower deck with it. They have a gas tank kit. You dump a pint or quart in the tank (after you clean it with acid) and swirl it around and then let it drain overnight. It will dry to a rockhard coating in the tank that will not ever come off. I have used it and it worked flawless. It is silver colored and you can see straight to the bottom of the tank right through the gas when it is done and it stays that way. You can have the tank back in service in a day or two and you will be very happy with the results, I was. Later.

Strapping the gas tank to a tractor wheel works, but if you have no field work to do- mount it to a cement mixer drum- or if small enough, strap it inside. Use nails, nuts, etc., rather than gravel or rocks, on the inside of the tank. Run it for several hours. Magnets can retrieve nuts, but not rocks, when it comes to emptying the tank. If something rattles inside, you don't have the last one out- no need to count anything. Check with a radiator shop for a sealant- several brands available- Johnson and others.

I have never tried this but some say to jack up one rear wheel of a tractor put in the bolts or pea gravel.Strap the tank to the wheel, put the tractor in 1st.gear and let it do the work.

Theres a sealer you can buy but it cost around $50. I clean my tanks by putting in a number of 1/2 inch nuts, I count them so I know I get them back out. Then just shake the tank real good. Then I wash it out with turpentine and then just use it. So far this has worked for me
