OT: War against pigeons - Ideas?

This means war! It isn't dignified for a tractor to wake up in the spring covered with pigeon s***! From what I can see, there's two pigeons up in our open-faced shed. I don't want to have to start tarping everything in it. Any ideas for getting rid of those blasted pigeons? (I don't want to start shooting either - I'm not good enough a shot, I'll probably put holes in the tin)

If you choose to shoot them with a 22, they make a CB round. same shell, basicly just the cap for powder. It will go about 1/2 way through a pine 1 x 4 at close range. Dave NE IA

Think that's bad. I just discovered one of my 30lb turkeys roosted on the snowmobile last night.

Specter - Here's how to win in one night. in reply to Specter, 04-04-2006 11:37:10
I used a .410 with 2 1/2 shells and go in after dark with a flashlight. The birds will not fly after dark, they'll just sit there and wait for you to carry out thier death sentence. This works with sparrows as well. A friend of mine and I used to go out after dark and use a blow gun in the steer shed. We'd kill 30 birds as they sat in thier nests and roosts. Still never looked like we did anything the next morning. It's not sporting but you're looking for extermination, not sport.

The .410 shotgun worked well in a wood sided, shingle roofed barn but if you have tin, use a pump BB gun. If you only pump it 5 or 6 times, it will not go through tin. A full 10 pumps WILL go through tin. Watch out for ricocheting into glass if you have a cab tractor. If you do as the others say and use a .22 with bird shot, get a gun you don't value as bird shot will ruin the rifling.

Good luck in your extermination.

Fill the roof area with smoke from an older diesel tractor. I do this about every six months; haven't had a sparrow in my old shed for more than 10 years. You might have to do it in an open shed more often, at first anyway. My shed has doors but it is not tight enough to keep the sparrows out.

If you don't want to shoot them, get a recording of an owl and play it at them over speakers. They'll be gone. Or, might want to try one of them fake owls from Northern that turns its head and sounds like an owl. No clue if they really work, but know the owl recording has worked.

No hawks or falcons in the area? They don't play games with pigeons, rabbits, the old neighbor's chihuahua. Dropped the chihuahua though - too mean I guess (got hurt, but lived). They're excellent hunters and pigeons are like flying caviar and lobster dinners to them.

I'd like to say .17 or .22 caliber, but if you miss, they travel forever and ever and ever. A .410 w/bird shot if close enough, but if you miss, will likely pepper the neighbors siding, the shed, the old geezer Cheney shot, some other stuff.

Specter,
Try "tanglefoot" . You can get it from gemplers.com. If you buy a tube, you put it in a caulk gun and apply where they land and perch. It also is sold in a tub and you apply it with a putty knife, but is kind of a pain to apply. Really sticky stuff and lasts for a while. I see Menards had some plastic spike strips for discouraging birds from roosting, although they seemd pricey. I have also seen aluminum pie tins tied from string that wave and reflect in the wind. Don't know if that will scare them away and be a long time deterrent. Tangle foot has worked the best for me. good Luck

Alka Seltzer.

Just kidding, don't do this I think it's illegal (and cruel to the birds)

a pellet gun or bb gun will put a hole in the tin. i would hinge some fence bord over it and hinge it with a lock on it so it will open and stay shut closed

Say, that's a good idea! Keep em out permanently. That way, if I need anything out of the rafters, I can unstaple a section, then staple it back up again when I'm done. I'm going to have to try this.

Thanks for the ideas everybody! I'm thinking it'll be a short war!

We had a bird broblem on top of the garage door openers. They always wanted to nest there. I solved it by putting a small plastic bowl with moth balls in it on top of the opener. They left and haven't been back for three years. All I do is refill the bowls with about half a dozen moth balls each Spring. Easy enough to give it a try and no harm done if it doesn't work for you.

Get some 12 gauge "Birb Bombs". Geta box and shot em in there direction every day for a month they will be rtelocated on there own. The shells shoot a bunch of little explosives that go off quite a bit after they leave your barrel, no need to be a good shot. I believe Cabelas carries them also.

Lots of people would like to trap them to use to train bird dogs, lots of other people would like to practice their shooting skills on them in your barn yard. Just put the word out locally and you should have several options for getting rid of them.

A air rifle with a cheap ($25.00)laser scope on it works well. All you do is go out in the evening and put the red dot on the pigion, and pull the trigger. It is extremly hard to miss. Dave NE IA

Can't, it's an open faced shed, and it would probably be near impossible to put doors on it.

Keep your freshly polished pickup out side the shed door.

No way to beat the birds. Been trying for 25 years.

A decent air rifle will take them out, but will not do much damage to anything else.

Is an air rifle not powerful enough to put a hole in tin? I'm not worried if I hit the wood beams a few times, but I don't want to put a hole in the tin roof.

Plastic owls won't work, poison will if you care to risk it. Shooting will but you don't want to. Monofilament fish line strung in a latice work where they fly will work if you can get it up there. They can't see it, fly into it and get discouraged from coming in. I don't know if it feasible for you though.

I would try shooting if there was some way I could be sure I wouldn't put a hole in the tin roof. Maybe a lower-performance air rifle? As to the fish line, do the pigeons break it when they hit it? If it holds together, I would try it, but if it breaks, I'd end up with bits of fishline all over the shed. Also, I store some stuff up in the rafters, so it may or may not work for me.

A live trap worked for me. Made by Mustang. Also worked for turtle doves when they got too thick.
