I am restoring a Farmall M and want to put it on 12 volt with an Altenator. Question is what is the trick to get it to fit under the hood without having to "modify" the hood? I've seen a lot of people who have cut holes in the hood to get it to fit but I don't want to do this since it will be a show tractor.

If you want to spend a few more bucks and avoid the hassle, get a electrical shop to convert your generator to 12 volt. Looks better..... ...

With a Delco alternator, all I did was flip the generator bracket, run a bolt through the alternator hole thats not threaded then through the front bolt hole ,I call the bottom and bend the top generator braket just a little and it fit perfect, even used the same belt.Used washers to shim the alternator out just enough to line up the belt.

Getting the alternator to fit under the hood really isn't a problem on an M, there is sufficient space under the hood. Experiment a little, use the shortest belt possible. Fitting an alternator under the hood of an H is a different story.

Did that on a cub, 450 and a 300U. We used alternators from a toyota pickup truck, around a 1986. Has built in regulator and we just had them checked at the parts store and looked at how it was hooked up that way and wired it up. All 3 have been working good for the last 2 years

You have to mount the alternator to the right of
the mounting bracket using a long bolt thru
the alternator and the two holes of the bracket.
Also you have to use a shorter belt since the pulley is closer. Also, the top bracket has to be modified to fit the alternator.
