I am tired to starting a project and then having to run to the hardware store for the little stuff. What sort of inventory of wood/cap screws, lag bolts etc. do you all keep on hand?

I buy a few pounds when I get to Tractor supply. I have coffee cans full, I need to get some kind of bin setup. One problem now is a lot of stuff has metric sizes and some a mixture, I dont know if TSC has metric by the pound yet.

It is the unwritten rule of inventory control -- What ever size of bolt etc. that you will need, you will not have it. It is 11.35 on a Saturday morning and the shop closes promptly at noon, and it is a 40 minute drive. No they will not put a package out for you because local kids will steal it to sell for drugs, etc. And when you get there Monday at eight, they just sold the last ones at t
hree minutes to eight, and the next shipment is due Thursday..... Sound familiar???? Always seeme that the bolt bin is full..... ..... of the wr
ong size!!!!! .....QR.....

I always buy extra of what ever I need. If I see good assortment packs I usually buy them too, springs, cotter keys, self tapping screws, etc. I still have to make a lot of trips but sometimes I can at least substitute something until I can replace it with the proper piece.

I'm a real tightwad. Assortments seem to me to all ways be out of the size I need and have ones I never use. Goes for bolt, nails, whatever. When I need to go to town for some thing, I buy about 3 times what I need-in that size. Maybe a few just a little longer or shorter. After a while I build up a stock of the common used sizes.

have a tractor supply store close and go there time to time and buy several pounds of bolts washers nuts. something like 1.28 a pound. try to keep a selection of 1/4 , 3/8 and 1/2 bolts on hand.

Several of the chain places sell small to large assortments or bins or can build your own bins. Lawson as metioned below are good but expensive and Fastenal, McMaster Carr, Grainger, and others. We had some wood bins my grand dad built and then later bought some Dorman bolt drawers at auction and keep them filled with bolts from various suppliers with a few Lawson bolts. Use to have a salesman come by to refill them but ouch that cost too much. Best to just find a local bolt supplier in larger towns that sells quality stuff and not buy cheap chain store kind. I don't use metric much but found a handy assortment of those in plastic drawer at Graingers.

Years ago at the Farm & Science Review Dad ordered a bolt bin that some company had on special. It has most sizes from 1/4" up to 3/4" this has been a lifesaver. I keep it restocked with bolts from a local tractor dealer that sells them by the pound.

I think I'd need the same inventory the hadware store has to be totally safe. When buying bolts and washers by the pound I always get extra and only nuts and washers seem to be the size I need. Surprising how often I go out to that useless junk behind the barn that burns everybody else and find what I need though.lol

I have a Lawson bolt assortment as well as some other trays of cotter pins, fuses, screws etc. They are pricey but they are very high quality bolts. Worth the money IMHO, nothing worse than those cheap break em with a 1/4 ratchet bolts ya get in town...I also seem to have about 30 buckets, cans and valve covers full of bolts and other useless stuff that I never seem to use.....Jim

I seem to be able to maintain a rather large inventory of totally useless, rusted, bent, and odd sized hardware of just about any description.
Doesn't seem to make any difference what you have on hand, it will never be what you need at that particular moment.

I got the same stuff Rusty. And I think all of us old iron fanatics, or farmers in general are the same. I got it from my dad who came up during the depression. I never throw anything away till it is so small, or so far gone as to be totally unusable even for filler when welding. And every once in awhile, I'll go to the scrap pile and find just what I needed for something. I have a bolt bin that was on the place when I moved here and it has 72 small bins in it and they are just the right size for small boxes of 100 bolts or nuts, washers, etc. I get them by the box in Springfield and they are pretty cheap and I get nothing but grade 8. When the box runs out, I tip it up on end so I know it's empty, and the next time I go to town I take inventory and get whatever I'm out of. I remember growing up on the farm and I don't think dad EVER had a new bolt on the place. Seemed like we were always canabilizing something just for the bolt or something. Ya can't ever have too many bolts. harley

My Dad had a sign in his shop that read:

"Use it up, and wear it out... Make it do, or do without."

Still makes sense to me.

I've got some metal bins from when Honey welll closed up shop here. I keep everything I can on hand from machine screw up to 3/4". After that I buy, and always extra. The fastener shop in town orders most stuff in so it is the same price for 3 as for 25 usually.
