Just wanted to get some opinions from you guys out there. I"ve got a 37 F-20 on propane that I"m restoring. Thing is I want to go original but I know the F-20 didn"t come out with LP from the factory. I am a big on using propane, got 2 M"s, 2 H"s and a 300 all on LP. According to my dad, my grandfather bought a F-20 on propane that was rebuilt and sold from a dealer with the conversion kit and then later took the kit and put on this tractor I have now. I"ve been to several shows and haven"t seen a 20 on propane. Just curious what you guys think about think... should I keep it on LP or go original?

Thanks Jeff

I got some clarification from my dad about this tractor. He said my grandfather purchased this kit from some tractor part supply in Texas when he did a complete overhaul on the engine, putting 4 inch stepped head piston. The tank is made for the F-20 bolts right on, the steering shaft goes through the tank. There is no "homemade" welds or anything with this tank. According to my dad the kit came with instructions how to spud into the original carburetor, only thing I need is the vaporizer, but I've got a couple Ensign ones like I use on my M that I could use. Once I get it back together I'll get some pictures put on here.

Jeff, On these old systems there is no vaporizer, per-say. There is a single copper line that is tied to the liquid and vapor valves via a Y in the copper line. From the Y the line is routed down the right side of the head at the valve cover junction to the head, going forward and wrapping around the front of the head then back around the left hand side of the engine. Then dropping down to where the line spuds into the gas carb...or... into a thin pancake style carb, that attaches to the tophalf of a regular gas carb.
The engine is started, and ran on vapor till the engine is up to operating temp. At that time one would switch over to liquid. The engine heat, by means of the air the fans draws through the radiator will vaporize the liquid in the line. This is how the F20 I saw was set up. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Jeff, I was going to comment this morning early , but had water problems and didn't get to, So here goes.....
I saw an unrestored F20 in the middle of the TX panhandle. It was as neat and clean a setup as I have ever seen. I am in no way a F-series fan, but this is the one I would do. The tank looks to be a factory set-up, even though we know that didn't happen. The rear edge of the hood was not cut in any way. So my $.02 is Keep It on LP. As Steven said, there are hundres of F20/F30s out there on gasoline. Yours will be very unique and not everyone will have one.
And as the rest have asked Show Pics soon!!!
Later,
John A.

Like others said you may want to leave it that way for the uniqueness and since it was your grand father's tractor. I would keep it LP if you can but may not be practical depending on brand of LP system and if it will work and parts are available to get it working. Several others have ran into LP systems where the company that made the regulator or mixer is long out of business and no parts available. New LP hoses, lines, guages and valves should be no problem and your local LP dealer can tell you what is available for other parts also. There is a place in Oklahoma that has some Ensign parts and kits and new Impco regulators are available too.

There are a bazillion nicely restored origional F-20s. If the tractor was used burning propane through it's working life I think it is appropriate to restore it that way. I haven't seen many professional propane F-20 conversions and it would definitely peak my interest at a show.
