I have been having a problem with crows pulling up my newly planted swetcorn seed. Last spring I counted over a 100 crows in and around my corn patch. Shot a few, laid in the rows and they still got in my corn. Made a pretty realistic looking scare crow and saw one sitting on top of it. I use to have a product called crow go (67% coal tar @ 27% cresote) but is no longer available. What do you feller's do or use?

Had an old neighbor (originally from Nebraska- name was not Allan) who actually did the following: Put 1/2 stick of dynamite in the middle of a grocery sack full of pea gravel, in the middle of the field- sprinkled some grain around, so they would congregate- detonated it, and killed about 20 crows with the projectile gravel. Left the dead crows lying around the field, and that drove the rest of them off. Your results may vary. This was done in the '50's, when neighbors (and law enforcement) seemed to be more tolerant of eccentric behavior.

I usually plant hot peppers around the corn. Then I dry them and grind them into a powder for dusting the next years crop.

Marv, The Amish told me to make a few roosts by just digging in some long fence posts, and setting a conabear trap on top. They say the screaming crows will keep them away for a while. We live in town, but once in a while we take our preditor call (CD) unit to the country, and put in a fighting crow call. We also have three plastic crows to set on the ground to act like they are fighting. On a calm day they will fly in in less than five minuets. If you and a few buddies can gang up on them and hit them on the fly, they at times get real plentiful. Dave NE IA

Here in eastern NC we usually sprinkle turpentine on the seeds before planting. I have seen larger farmers dump seed in a 5 gallon bucket and mix in only 1-2 teapsoons of turpentine and stir. I usually just sprinkle a little on the seed in planter hopper. You want to make sure it is mixed good. A little bit of the smell keeps the crows away. It has worked for me, but your results may vary.

Is that popeye's sister? mother?

Place a tall cross pole and hang the dead crows from it, head down so their wings fold out. Also try a large blow up owl decoy. Crows hate-em. Also makes shooting em easier when they go crazy over the owl!

Jack,
You was real close to being right it is a picture of popeye"s mom. There was another part to this picture but I couldn"t fit it in.

Marv,
I still have all my arms so far. I do agree with what Jack said about the owl decoy. I have a neighbor that done this done this also.
Take Care! Mike

I use rubber snakes in my garden, works pretty good. used to I couldn't raise any corn due to the crows. Now my corn grows really good but the racoons tear it up. Anyone know how to keep the racoons out??

wfw, Last few years I have put an electric fence wire about 4 inches off the ground around the corn to keep the coons out. So far it has worked well. Put another strand of wire about 4 feet up for deer.

Dave,
Not sure if she seeing anyone or not? Don't think there would be a long waiting list on this. But you never can tell. As far as a phone # couldn't tell you if she does or doesn't.

Didn't have any of the antique toys back then. Guess I was one of the lucky ones.
Last time I did see her she was having a hard time kick starting her broom. Sorry I wasn't much of a help. But if I do see here I'll let her know.

Mike, as a return favor I will send you my ex-wives number, you will know when she finds you. Be aware if the ground shakes and it appears as if a clowd is blocking the sun. She is big enough to pull a beer wagon with out breaking a sweat. By the way-- the harness she is wearing I bought with my hard earned money. (bless her heart) No she is not a horse, I would probably been better off as a horse doesn't come in heat as often. I probably better stop this as her attorney always seems to be in touch--phone is ringing as I type this. I wonder what is upseting him now, perhaps its the boot I placed in his butt is cramping up a tide bit again. Even though he is a big A$$ ---Must not be enough room for his head and my boot at the same time. And he said I was the one that had a attitude---yea right! Dave NE IA

Hey Mike in MI, I think that you must have had a little of that liquid fermented corn. I bet you were glad to get rid of her, not missing a arm are you?
