If the other suggestions don't work, you need to advise what you mean by it doesn't start.

If absolutely nothing happens, it's probably a power supply or motherboard problem. The excess heat has popped a connection loose or killed a mobo component or the battery.

If the system does a POST (tries to boot up, hard drive light comes on, but never actually gets you to Windows), I would lean toward a loose or failed memory chip (VAIO's are known to have memory chip related problems) or a dead hard drive.

If the tinkering with the battery, the power on button, or reseating the memory chip(s) doesn't work, unless you're real handy working on these things, the cost of repairs would likely not be worth the effort.

Chris,

Try holding the "on" button for a full 10 seconds. Bet she pops right back to life.

Another thing to try is take the battery out while it's unplugged. Sometimes that will reset it. If neither trick works I'd avoid it.

Yes Sir, Fer Sure.

Shorted batteries stop the little guys cold in their tracks. I always just yank the battery on an unknown machine and use the adaptor.

I think the Dell laptops are the worst about this oddity. Darned things will oftentimes loose their BIOS and folks get impatient, throw 'em away or sell for a few cents on the dollar.

Takes a few seconds for 'em to run their parameters to regain their "sea legs" and away they go again. :>)
