Which Tractor do you Recommend??

I have my toy, a 2N...now I'm needing a real tractor for maintaining 21 acres. Give me some recommendations please..I think I'd like to have at least a 40 hp and maybe even 50..I'm not hung up on brand just dependability and value for the money...Suggestions? Opinions?

I've been very happy with my Minneapolis Jetstar 3 and front end loader. Used it for 20 years so far. But no three point. For 3 point work, I have a Ford 3000. The Jet Star 3 was followed by M5, 302, etc. Good tractors too.

You might want to look at an Allis Chalmers D19. I know, I know, they're bigger tractors, but you can't beat the horsepower for the price. I've seen some around here (gas & Diesel) sell sell for $2000-3000. We have a gas and am really pleased with it. They make a pretty good loader tractor. Ours also has 2 remotes, I don't know how they compare to the Fords though.

been on an allis wd since i was 5, so thats my pick! i've got a wd45 now with a 2-14 rollover plow, and a 8' mounted disk, and i'll bet you'd be hard pressed to find something as cheap that would cover more ground faster.

With Ford, 3000, 4000, 5000, 3600, 4100, 4600, 5600, 36/3910, 4610, 5610. Even look at 3930 and 4630. The first are more basic, and when you get to the 10's you get more options with transmissions, FWD, and faster hydraulics. At this point there probably isn't much price spread on the more basic models. However, if hydraulic capacity isn't a big concern, the 4000 would be my first pick. Pound for pound, and dollar for dollar, I think it's the best performing tractor Ford ever built. I'm talking the early 70's 4000.
From my own perspective I would not be a big fan of the 800 series through to the early 4000 series up to '65. I just think them dated, and not near the tractor of the later ones. Good luck.

I've had a Ford 8N for about 14 years and it has been a good tractor. Last year I needed a little more power for some projects and I found a Ford 801 Powermaster (861 Diesel) for around $3000 in good running condition. It has around 48 PTO HP and it's good on fuel. If you can find one of these I think you will be pleased.

Does the 801 or 861 have power steering? I think I will definitely get PS when I upgrade a little. Had not thought about the *61- There is a local (12 miles) place near here that buys and sells. He's one of those you have to watch out both eyes..(OOPS I'm in trouble, I have only one)I do remember seeing an 861 or two there last year..I'm gonna check em out this afternoon..Thanks

Since you're used to a Ford utility, I'd suggest one of many later models of Ford or Massey Fergusons simular, but more modern (and more powerful)

Fords; 3000 (and it's later variants) 4000

Massey Ferguson 135, 150, 165, 135/240/245/250, 255, 265.

I take care of a little over 80 acres with a 150 MF. Seems to handle 99% of my needs.

Don't know what you are planning, but my 8N does most of the work on my 101 acres. I also have an IH 454 that I use for loader work. Ford 3000 or 4000 tractors are also nice machines and parts are readily available (and NOT expensive).

Failed to say that I much prefer diesel but for the right price and a solid machine, a gas burner would be fine..Bottom line, I want the most tractor for the money..

Value for the money, dont' forget the David Browns. They don't sell nearly as high as a lot of other brands. Model 990 or 995.

Well, it really depends. Are you wanting 4 wheel drive or just 2? Gas or diesel? New or used? If you want something that is 2 wheel drive and gas and used, an Allis Chalmers WD or equivilant from other brands would be great. If you want 4 wheel drive and a diesel, a new or slightly used Deere would be good, but they ain't exactly cheap. It really depends on what you want (and what you can afford) Have fun searching, itt'l get ineresting fast. :)

Don't know of a really "bad" tractor out there. They all have their place to shine.

I've found good value for the money with Massey Ferguson and Allis Chalmers but for a working tractor you need to have service support so you might want to start with what dealers you have available.

I steer clear of JD and Ford because both manufacturers are real proud of their parts. Same part costs much less for any other tractor.

It's all a matter of preference. The best looking tractor is always any model that comes with a chain to pull your stuck tractor out.

You're about right with going for 40 to 50 hp. I have a 37 hp that is just about maxed when cutting tall grass & light brush with a 6' field cutter. For 21 acres, you're going to want at least an 8' cutter and maybe batwings to go 16' wide.

what th 2n is not good enough. I farmed 300acares with a 8n when i was a kid. and you can"t do 40 acares.

Used to have a f-12 new did 301 acres just worked in the morning and fishing in afternoon.If I would have taking a deeper breath I could have said 305 acres..smile

International 464, 484, Case Ih 485. Good heavy tractors with 8/4 transmissions and tough engines.

Any X600/X610 from a 3600 to a 5610 or so in your price range. Might even run up on a 7610 low profile thats priced right.
