So,

I buy this old trailer 6 months ago. Go to register it and the courthouse says I gotta drag the thing to town, as the sheriff has to inspect it because it came from out of state.

Fine, maybe someday I'll drag it to town; meanwhile it can just set out there in the county.

Broke a hydraulic hose this morning and have to run to town for repairs anyway; yeah, this will be a good time to finally get that darned trailer inspected and tagged fer the road in case I have to haul an old tractor 'er some darned thing.

Called the Sheriff's Office just to make sure someone would be there to handle this 2-minute chore, 'cause I don't wanna drag the thing in there in the first place.

Deputy tells me to set tight; I'll come to you, be there in 30 minutes. That way, you don't have to tow it in here to the courthouse; we don't have anywhere for ya to park it anyway.

Okay, fine.

Glad somebody wasn't breaking into the house; been watchin' the darned driveway fer 2 hours now, no deputy and I still need that silly hose.

My world is just one long horrid grind. :>(

you had me scared there Allan. For a second, I thought you were gonna say your trailer had been stolen, and that"s why you had to call the sheriff. What size it your trailer? I"d like to find one, about 20 foot plus the dovetail. Just as soon as I decide if I should get a flatbed or keep the box and throw a gooseneck hitch in it.

We don't have anything like that in Missouri. Out of the nine trailers we have three of them have no license at all, one has no lights, and one has a plate that expired three years ago. The three trailers that run all the time are all legal, but the others are far from it. Never have any problem's, knock on wood!

I Quess some states are different, but here in ohio you can get a home made title for a trailer and throw the original title away,it's a lot less agrivation than getting them inspected and messing around, all you have to do is get it weighed and they will issue you a new title. If it's under 4000 pounds in ohio you don't even need a title, just a bill of sale.

Well the sure fire way to find the cops is to pull out the drive without a plate on.

Make sure you fasten that plate on good too ! We had a trailer with a cheapo light bracket that you fasten the plate to. Got pulled over on the first trip. Where's your plate ? he asked ? I said here's the registration we just put it on before we left. Go back and look No plate ! long gone bracket broken off. He made me unhook it and not go on until I got another plate. I was able to talk him into letting me pull off the busy 4 lane and unhook in a school parking lot.I wasn't sure he was going to let us at first. Lucky we were still in our state and the town we were near DMV was open so we could buy another plate.

They finally did away with that foolishness in Washington- I think because the State Patrol was in charge of the festivities, and they had cutbacks in staff and didn't have time to deal with it anymore. So when I went to the licensing dept. to transfer an out of state trailer recently, the only hangup was they wanted a gross weight- but the lady quizzed me on the size, etc., then asked (from a cheat-sheet) if I thought it weighed about 2,400#. Being a reasonably bright lad, I solemnly considered the proposition for a moment, then said I thought that was really, really close. The bureaucracy having thus been served, the rest of the transaction was completed without incident.

Guess I'm lucky, the state trooper lives down the road from me. I have him inspect my stuff on his way to work. He has no choice cause he uses my water truck to haul his water. I still have to pay the county the three bucks when I licence it but at least I dont have to haul it to town.

Here in Colorado, or used to be, you don't want to delay with a title recording that is stale. Like if you buy a car and the title is dated, it is something like 30 days or it has to be inspected, same as out of state. Dealers can wait. That is the reason that if I sell an old car, like I did last week, I leave the date open. Colorado used to need a notary on cars, sure glad they did away with that.

I had to deal with the stale registration thing on a trailer I bought in Iowa. I had to weigh the trailer and get an inspection. Since the trailer was over 2000 pounds, I had to post a bond before they would give me title. I did have to pay the state patrol for the inspection, but that was only because the trailer was over 2000 lbs. If it is under 2000 lbs, any dealer can do the inspection. Luckily, the DMV was 2 blocks from where I worked, and I found someone there that was extremely helpful.

Nebraska has all these funky little laws, which absolutely nickel and dime ya to death.

Like if you claim "repairs" on your taxes, then ya have to run to the assesors office and let them up the antie on the value of said piece of equipment, so that it can be taxed a little more next year. Repairs improve the value of stuff, don't ya know.

Deputy just showed up; wife timed him when he stepped out of the pickup. It took all of 45 seconds and my last $10 bill. :>(

HUH! I'm down in SE Nebraska. I've claimed "repairs" on my taxes for years! Never had my property taxes upped because of it! I've even told the assessor about repairs on stuff! They did try to up my taxes since I cut cedar trees down, but a tax protest stopped it (last year).

Well the way you're camaflaged there in the trees it's a wonder he even saw ya old buddy. Down here in Zury, I got 4 trailers and , yep you guessed it, 1 plate. no registrations, no trailer I.D. tags, and whichever one hits the road, if it's more than ten miles or so, it gets the tag. Otherwise they don't even get a second look. Been pullin two different ones through the county seat for 6 years now without a light on either one of them, but you can see the pickup lights so in the daylight that's ok. Love it here in the country. Harley
