I've got a ford 4000 with independant PTO that continues to turn after it is disengaged. My question is,how much can I do to the PTO brake without tearing the whole rear end apart? The manual makes it look like you need to split at the transmission/ differential to get at it. I'm not sure how the brake is set up but it looks like spring on, hydaulic off. I can stop the shaft with slight load so I know it is disengaging. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you're dealing with the 8 speed 4000, then there is a small brake shoe that acts against the clutch housing. It's oil applied, as far as I know, and I do know that it's a poison prick to change. The last one I did, I dropped the brake shoe pivot pin down into the FWD transfer case off the telescopic magnet I was using to place it. So i ended up with the transfer case off, and I rotated the center housing about the axles until it was standing straight up. Also had the round access cover off. There's no easy way in there for somebody with average/large mits. You might get lucky if you try going in the top through the lift cover opening. Beyond that, it's a rear split... or mabey both. After having done that job, I was glad I had waited a few years until I had the tranny out anyway. I wouldn't bother again unless I needed to do the rear split anyway. Your mileage may vary....

First off, for specific questions on tracotrs, the individual boards are better. Secondly, from what I've been told, and I have a SOS '62 Ford 4000, is that with the SOS transmissions, this is a common thing in all of them. Someone else will have seome more information on the manual transmissions or the 2 cyl. Paul
