super M Farmall--what to look for when buying

I posted this on the IH board but thought posting it here too couldn't hurt. There is a Super M Farmall at an auction near me this Saturday. I have been getting it done with an 8n Ford but wouldn't mind some more horsepower.

I know of John Smith's site on buying n series and wonder if there is something similar on red iron. If not anything to look for or avoid?

Any help appreciated

One of the main items to look for you won't find without operating the tractor. Popping out if gear is one of the more diffcult issues to fix, even that isn't so common. After that the M and H are pretty much indestructable. The basics are oil and coolant leaks, cracked castings, brake and clutch peddle tension and smoke at start up. There is no common "weak point" in these tractors, IH got it right and didn't screw it up until the early 560s came out. Most Ms and Hs "die" from being parked without a rain cap on the exhaust and that freezes up the engine. Even then they are coaxed back to life sometimes.

I always heard they had a problem with cracking heads. I`d pull the oil dipstick and make sure it aint milky. Other than that, just the basic stuff you check when looking at any 50 yr old tractor. Good Luck Brokenwrench

Well if you know what to look for on a Ford then you pretty much know what to look for on any of them. Most tractors are very close to each other on where problems will be, like leaks, tires, sheet metal etc.
