How do you know if the tractor is positive ground or not ? I bought the tractor and it had no battery just want to make sure I hooked it up correctly. Thanks

A 9N Ford left the factory set up (+) ground, 6-Volt. What has been done to it since then is anybody's guess.

If it still is set up for 6-Volt, connect the battery (+) ground, and then polarize the generator BEFORE starting it. (If you don't know how to do this, go to the "N" Board, and do a search for "polarize".)

If it has been conveted to 12-Volts WITH AN ALTERNATOR, MOST LIKELY, it is (-) ground.

Generators are positive ground systems, alternators are negative ground.

Your statements are wrong and wrong.

My 1966 IH cub left the factory with a 12v negatively grounded generator... ( 66 was the first year for that with cubs.. )

Also.. there are examples of both 6v, and 12v positive ground alternators.. as well as case isolated alternators that do not use the chassie as a direct ground reference.

Hit a delco alternator chart.. you will se a few examples of positive ground alternators...

If it is still 6 volt (generator instead of alternator is a good indication), then it will be POSITIVE ground. All N's came positive ground from the factory.
