I got a flat tire on my 4-wheeler saturday while mudding. It looks like a thorn poked its way throught the measly 1 or 2 plys of the tire. My question is; do I need to take the tire off the rim and put on a patch, or can I just use some of the tire sealant like Fix-A-Flat or that green slim. I remeber how much of a pain it was to get the tires on the rims, I"d rather not take them back off. Thanks for any help or ideas

Go to any autoparts store and buy a plug kit. Got one a while back at NAPA for around $10

When the OE tires on our 4-wheelers wear out we've been switching to Dirt Devil tires. They are 6 plys and they last longer with less flats. They are not high priced either.

Slim’em, green stuff all the tires. Even with the supper swampers you will have a flat. A upgrade to a tire with more plies will let ya ride it with out the tire break’in off the rim, they have stiffer side walls. I run 1 ½ to 2 psi air pressure in mine. Its not unusual for me to git 80 to 100 miles away from home base so a plug kit the type with the big round rope look’in plugs (Safty Seal) will do a good job and a foot air pump. I have had flats that after I plugged them up the tire looked like a rag mop. When I do the marathon 4 gal. Of gas comes in handy, food, beer, 3 qts of oil, tools, duck tape. Take a 3 or 4” PVC pipe to make a good tool box and install screw on caps.

I stuck a piece of wood in my rear atv tire that was about the size of a toothpick. I put 24 oz. of the Green Slime in it and it stopped the leak. I am thinking about putting it in my other tires. A lot of lawn care guys swear by it.

Some of that slime stuff will rust your rims and is a REAL mess if the tire ever has to be removed from the rim.I have had good luck with Neeley tire rope and the tire cam be fixed on the rim.it is available at www.gemplers.com.

I have used slime and fix-a flat on mine as well as the riding lawnmower. It is great stuff. I pluged one on my mower only becouse it was a large hole. If you don't put something in it and if you have thorns, you will spend most of your time fixing flats. I have not had a flat on the ATV since I bought it new in 03. You can get a slow leak if it sets for a month or so.

Rich,
I've had the same problem with ATV and golf cart tubeless tires. Thorns leave tiny holes, and I didn't want to ream it out into a big hole to use a plug. If you got one thorn, you will find more, so stripping the tire and patching is a bother. I have had great success using Slime. They have several types, get the low pressure ATV type if possible. It will seal the existing hole and the next one you haven't gotten yet. Just remove valve stem and shoot it in.

Depending on the size of the hole you might be able to get a plug kit from somewhere like NAPA and simply plug it on the rim. I've run tires on my truck for years with plugs with no problem. If pluging's not an option for some reason then take it in to a tire shop and let them put a patch on the inside or simply put a tube in it. Good luck.

My son does a lot of rideing with his freinds. They are at the black hills this week. They take off the stock tires and put those tractor lug tires on because of thorns and extra traction.
