I saw an 856 Farmall for sale. I've been looking for a bigger tractor and I don't know much about the farmalls. Can anyone give me some information on these tractors such as strong/weak points, features, parts availability?
Thank you.

The 856 is definitely a "good" tractor. I have owned one and had a few through my shop. Mostly for TA's(Torque Amplifier), clutchs or hydraulic repairs typical wear out stuff on a tractor of that vintage. I'm not a Farmall fan myself. There are other tractors out there that are built a little better and are a bit more user friendly to fix and operate in my opinion.

I purchased a low houred 856 two years ago for using with a silage baler. I am very happy with this machine, a old workhorse that is larger than I needed but the cost was less than the 60 hp ones and it is nice the have the hp when I want it.

95 to 100 horsepower. No real weak points, genuine good 'ol workhorse. Parts are readily available from any Case-IH dealer. Some folks say the 856 was probably the best all around tractor that IH ever produced. I used to own one, wish I still did.

J,

Farmalls don't have any weak points that I'm aware of, other than maybe a hydraulic pump every 30 or 40 years.

The 856 is roughly a 100 horse outfit built on a large frame chassis. Good sized tractor.

Allan
