My friend is wanting a small tractor to mow his 5 acre property. He is looking at a Yanmar 4X4 with approx. 12 hp. Any comments pro or con??

I have an 18 hp Yanmar, domestic market model. Similar to a JD 650 but with a 3 cyl. engine. It is a good little tractor & most parts can be had thru a couple of local dealers and many JD 650 parts fit. JD parts, however, are cheaper (yes, even JD parts are cheaper!) and most can be had within 24 hours, while it is an 8 day wait for Yanmar parts. Last year I was broken down for 10 days awaiting parts. Some parts are unobtainable. I have upgraded to a JD 770 for more power, more weight & better parts availability.

The yanmar 1700 and lower were thermosyphon like the old JD's.. 2000 and up had a water pump. If it were me.. I'd look for a 3digit model unit.. thought not a 177. The 3 digit are domestic USA units.. and the 4 digit as well as the 177 and 27X units are grey market, and have a bit harder time getting repair parts.

Hit the tractorbynet yanmar forum for lots of info.

The ym240 and 195would be a great size for that land. They have good gear choices, and are really a very advanced little tractor. My 1700 was the 2 cyl job.. the 3 cyl units sounded much smoother.. but the 2 cyls lugg really nicely.

They would not be my first choice of a plowing tractor due to lack of draft control, and lower weight per hp than many domestic 'old iron' tractors.. like an 8n or 9n or 2n.. etc.

12hp.. what is this? an 1100?

Beware.. the very small untis were not setup for 3pt hitch..( 2pt hitch.. for tilling.. great tiller tractors.. ) though you can easilly mod them to add the toplink bracket...

I"m not sure. I do have a 950 Deere, and it"s a Yanmar wearing green. Got from a friend going through a divorce and liqudated everything. I guess the engine"s ok, 22 or 25 HP. The rest of that little guy doesn"t really impress me much, and sure is hard to get parts for, and aren"t cheap. It"s an "80 water cooled diesel. I guess its ok, don"t use it much though.

Personally, if I were him, I"d pickup an N, or a Cub, or a B/C, or a VAC, or a wide variety of old reliables that can still get parts pretty readily and throw a finish mower on it. Much cheaper, and 50 years after we"re dead and gone, they still won"t be. Better stock up on the plugs though, they"re getting harder to find, at least for the B and C. Just my 2 cents.

Mark

I know a guy whose had a Yanmar for about 10 years and it's been a good tractor. Rule of thumb here: Yanmar = John Deere. John Deeres are really "brand named" Yanmars.

12 horsepower? We just bought a Craftsman lawn tractor with a 26 horsepower engine!

Other than that comment, I know nothing of the Yanmar tractors...

I'd put my 30 year old craftman 14 horse up against a new 26hp anyday. I'd also put the 12 HP yanmar against the 26hp. I'd bet the Yanmar would outmow it.

I would put my 26 hp Farmall H up against your 26 hp Craftsman anyday in a mowing contest :-)

Gearing and weighting make a big difference. A 10 hp Farmall Cub will mow a ton too.

But really have no experience or knowledge of a Yanmar weighting, gearing, etc.. I did have a JD 855 at one time and had a 48" finish mower on it, the Yanmar diesel in it had no problems.

Some of the "grey" Yanmars also had a PTO that rotated the wrong way (early Kubotas, too!).

Is this a new one or one they sold here years ago when there were Yanmar tractor dealers here.

My personal opinion is that 12 hp is not enough to run anything but a lawn mower. People with acreage usually end up using a tractor for more than they thought they would when they bought it. I wouldn't have anything less that 20-25 hp. Having said that, opinions are like belly buttons;everybody's got one!

Be aware that some of the smaller hp Yanmars (below about 18 hp, I think) are cooled by thermal cycling of the water. I understand that if they are in good working order there is no problem, but I prefer a water pump.

They are excellent tractors I would not be afraid of one. However there is a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel in my shop needing $2100 worth of repair parts. The parts are rather pricey. If he is buying from a dealer find out if it has been thru the Vietnam reconditioning process which usually consists of a get em running and a slick paint job. Not a total rebuild as they would have you believe.

I sure would ! But I'd probabally stick with the ones they made for John Deere so I could just get parts locally if needed. I have not heard of any Yanmar dealers, but there must be some around ?

Actually, the JD"s are just rebadged and painted a different color green and cost twice as much.

Go to tractorbynet.com, they have a forum for the yanmars. They will be able to tell you if it"s grey market, and what (if any) JD"s it is the same as.

Personally, I would say buy something else, it"s a glorified lawn tractor with tractor tires. Find a Farmall C or Oliver 550, and have 10 times the tractor.

The parts for JD models won't fit the Yanmar named ones. Most any of them I have saw the parts in the front end were only about half the size of the ones on the JD speced ones. And I can also tell you from first hand experience that a JD 750 only rated at around 18 HP will put out about 25 HP and the 4x4 will out perform the little bit larger Ford 800 series tractors.

Ah, another 750 lover. I bought mine new in 1988, and I STILL love it. That tractor will do anything even remotely reasonable that I ask of it, and on a teacupful of fuel at that.

Only thing I've spent on parts in 18 years that weren't directly related to operator stupidity and abuse is a set of seals for the rockshaft and a battery.

I once saw a flyer that said you needed to be especially careful of Yanmar, because of various knockoffs with the same name, and imported tractors that don't conform to the standards of the US. For example, the imports have substandard ROPS (if any at all), the PTO is built to work at several different speeds, far fewer safety shields, no overspeed clutches, and so on.

There was more, but that's the executive summary (my fuzzy memory has lost some of the other details.)

So... I suppose if you're not buying sight-unseen and it looks pretty normal, then I don't think I'd have a problem with it.
