What would make and engine "tired"? Or in other words have less HP than it may have had originally. Mainly talking mechanical/internal things here. (carb, spark, gas ect are easy fixes) thanks

Power robbing ills that don't require a overhaul would be a gummed up carb, sticky float valve in a carb, off timing, burnt points, clogged air filter, worn electrodes on plugs, half clogged fuel filter (strainer), old fuel.

If you have a worn out engine that needs valves or rings there is no "cheap" repair and fixing everything I listed above will only give marginal results.

If your spark plug gap is too wide, that can affect your engine's performance, but generally speaking, cylinder wall wear, piston ring wear, and valve wear leads to what's called a "tired" engine. Less compression, less horsepower.

Worn piston rings, worn pistons, the cylinders wear out, and the valves wear also. All of these things will result in much lower compression than what it should be, and the end result is a "tired" engine.
