Trailer turn signals; won't work on '89 Dodge

I have a 2 axle equipment with surge brakes and 4 wire electrical plug. The trailer has 6 turn/stop/tail lights and works fine when hooked to my '96 Ranger. However when I hook to my dads '89 Dodge the turn signals won't work. The marker and brake lights work fine, but the 3 three turn signals will not. When I unhook 2 of the turn signal bulbs on the trailer the remaining light will flash, albeit quicker and dimmer than with the Ranger. Both the Ranger and the Dodge have the Tee type trailer wiring that plugs into the existing harness.

Does anyone have any sugestions how to enable the Dodge's turn signal circuit to power all 3 lights on the trailer? I realize that I could cut back to 1 turn signal per side, but that would also mean 1 brake light per side and I like the safety of having 3. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for all of your advice! I'm thinking the heavy duty flasher is what is needed. If it were a ground issue it should affect all circuits not just the turn signals. Thanks again.

I had the 89 dodge and bought the plug in connectors that mate up to the truck underneath in rear.I used a RV plug though . But eveything worked fine using that Made for Dodge setup. As with most the turn signals cancel out the brake lights when activated.Hope that is some help to ya.

I agree it might be a flasher problem. You might want to spend an extra nickel and buy an electronic flasher. They flash at the same rate regardless of how many lights you have attached. Cost about $6-$7 at farm and barn. HTH

Your problem likely is not corrosion or film on the female side of the plug but a good way to clean them is with some steel-wool on the end of a small drill bit.

Put a heavy duty flasher on the Dodge,it probly still has the standard flasher which will do what you say it is doing.very simple fix for 5 Dollars or less.

Sound like the trailer isnt grounding to me,or the Dodge is wired differently than your Ranger.
