My cousin called the other day from eastern Colorado and said he had located my great-grandfather's jd d tractor. Seems it was bought with the help of some coupons my uncle got after serving in world war 2. Anyway, he asked if I wanted it to restore. Hmmm. I didn't have to think much about that answer. Guess later this summer I'll head from nc to co with a flatbed...
Anyone know about those war coupons?

Congratulations! Due to rationing of fuel, rubber and some metals, coupons were used to limit how much each of those elements families could "consume". The tractor was probably partly purchased with coupons, maybe so he could get it on rubber instead of steel or maybe he traded some fuel coupons for it? When my Mom and Dad were married both families pooled some of their fuel coupons so they could go on their honeymoon. We should ration fuel now and get those big-haired wimmens with the cell phones glued to their ears out of those SUV's!

I'd like to hear more about how you and your cousin located it. Was your great grandfather originally from CO or has the tractor migrated from NC? How exactly did you manage to find it?

My great-grandfather and my granddad farmed together near Holyoke, CO. My grandparents had a unique habit of never throwing ANYTHING away. As the years went by the farm got cluttered with disabled vehicles, machinery, and junk. It was a regular museum. I'm sure the folks in Nebraska on this site probably heard of them! Anyway, as an adolescent in the '60's I remember this d sitting by the barn with a belt hooked up to a corn sheller. Grandad hand started the thing just to shell corn. Then, a few years later it just disappeared. A collector in the general vicinity bought it from my grandad, but none of us really knew who. Then recently my cousin was talking with the guy and swapping stories and they realized he had our family tractor. He said it should go back to us and that's when my cousin called. Among other things I have retrieved and restored from the "museum" are my mom's '29 model a college car, a 70 jd, a 35 chev grain truck they bought new, a housier hutch, and a wood cook stove. Their farm was really an eyesore as junky as it was but it was great for restoration projects. I came to NC as an adult to practice dentistry...

That's a great story! Thanks for elaborating. My grandfather farmed in southern Idaho and his place looked similar to what you describe. I remember he had 3 Ford N-series tractors. I grew up in Salt Lake City so all I ever knew about farming was my 2 or 3 trips a year to be grandparents' place. Now I live in the country and have an old Ford tractor so I have become more knowledgeable about them. I was looking at old photographs from my youth and there was a picture of my younger brother and sister sitting on a 6 cylinder Funk 2N Ford. I never realized before that one of granddad's N's was a Funk. So I started asking about it. It turned out that my aunt had bought it from her dad but decided it was a piece of junk so she traded it in on a new chinese tractor. I tried to trace it but the dealer is now out of business. I found the owner of the dealership and explained what I was looking for and why. He remembered the tractor and told me he sold it to a guy on contract: $200 down and $100/month for 2 years. They never heard from the guy again and never got another dime from him. They gave me his name and the addresses he had given at the time, but he's long gone. My aunt says I should be able to find it by listening carefully for someone cursing loudly!

The last part of my grandfather's estate left is a ford 8n which is up for sealed bids right now. The bids end on may 30. My uncle is the manager of the estate and would not give children (my mother) or grandchildren a first opportunity so anyone could get it . My brother first learned to drive on it and is trying to get the high bid

I don't think you can get 'em anymore. And besides WWII was the "War TO End All Wars",... wasn't it? Glenn

WW I was the one 'to end all wars.' Obviously hasn't worked too well, eh? Too much human nature gets in the way.

Congratulations! Nothing like restoring a piece of old iron that has family history. Makes it seem that much more special.
