Tonight they where moving an 80' x 40' Gothic style barn in Nebraska...40 miles I believe, which in NE I think translates the next town down the road :)

But they do have some nifty equipment used to jack and keep those building level during transport.

I was actually in the barn on Sunday and it is huge. I don't know if you could even afford to build one like it today. It has since been painted and looks great. The moving part was only 13500 the powerlines were the rest. Course then there was foundation and such. The power company wouldn't let them unhook lines during peak so they had to wait a year to get it moved! First it was to hot then to cold!!

I know the people that own the barn and they had to take down 40 lines to get it home. The big transmission line had to be shut down for a week before they laid it on the ground to drain off electricity. With everything involved they had about 50,000 in moving it!!

Wow...

I'm sure those electric lines was a large portion too, if they had to pay for 'em like the posters below said.

Still I guess it was probably cheaper than dissassembling the barn and putting the pieces back together.

Yes, did you see them move over those power lines? I wonder if they were still live when they did that. Also wonder what the total cost of moving it was and if they have to pay for moving every power line that they had to.

Nah, they had to be dead.

They where 115kv...I'm sure the electricians here can answer, but I believe you need like 4' of airspace around them to keep them from arcing to ground!

I don't know what the laws are out there.

In MA and CT, utility lines *must* be moved for free.

They don't move them for free here in Nebraska! This State has the ONLY publicly owned utilities in the nation. The rates are lower, but when you have to move something, they have to be involved and get paid EVEN IF THERE ARE NO LINES TO MOVE. We moved a house 3 years ago. They had one line to move at the begining and one about mid way into the trip. They stayed for the whole move and we paid them by the hour to sit in the truck and watch us. All SIX of them.

KPL doesn't do it for free in Kansas either. I was going to move a house until I hit that expense. About 8 or 9 disconnects was going to run me over $10K - and they refused to tell me how much over it could be. That was more then the cost of moving the house by its self. Passed on the deal after that.

Well - it wasn't THAT bad for us! It only cost $700, but it's the thought of paying 6 guys to sit in a truck for three hours for nothing!

I figured they had to be dead but they said they fed 1/2 of Lincoln, didn't know if they would put that many people out of power for moving a barn. Now they are showing another crew moving a church down in Texas.

Yeah, I wondered, but I gotta figure they have more than one way to get power into there -- especially winter. If they're like New England, it's summer time that kills the power grid with the Air Conditioners all running.

Complete tangent, but I get a kick out of watching them build a new "Peaker" plant near me.

About 10 years ago Northeast Utility removed all the remaining little backup power plants they had explaining how they were inefficient, and the grid was reliable enough they didn't need these little plants anymore to take over in case there was a major problem on the transmission system.

Now because the electric grid can't handle peak demands, they're or someone is re-installing slightly bigger plants rather than run new transmission lines.
