I'm looking at buying another 4-wheeler, Yamaha Big Bear 400 4wd to be exact. I was wondering if this atv could possibly pull a NH 56 hay rake in a pinch. It'd be on slightly to moderately rolling land in fairly thick hay. Right now I have a Honda Recon 2wd which has only 250cc and all it does is spin the tires. What would be more of an issue, weight, traction, or power? Thaks for any opinions.

Some of those ATVs get pretty hgot when working.Has it got a spark arrester?Be sure you don't set the hay on fire.Neighbor had an inexperienced driver on Deere 6300 .Hay balled up,he didn't notice and the "down under" muffler set that cherry 6300 tractor and the hayfield on fire."I keep a close watch on this "hay" of mine " or something like that.

ATVs pulling heavier things on driveshaft models tend to break every tooth off the pinion gear.New pinion about 100 bucks,no service manual or special tools required.

I've used mine (Honda Foreman 4X4, 450cc engine) to rake with before. If I need it, I'll do it again. Would I want to rely on it daily for that, no, too much wear and too much gas. But I cant tell that it did it any harm. Its probably raked 250 acres in the last 4 years.

Main reason I've used it is to rake dry hay on wet ground when the tractor weight was pushing water up into the hay. Couple of other times, had a breakdown on the tractor pulling the rake, and didnt want to stop the baler or the mower.

Old tractors are much cheaper to buy than 4 wheelers and they are designed to be farmed with. In my opinion atv's are not tractors. You will tear up a $8000 atv trying to do what an $800 tractor will do, and you will do it darn quick. I bet the atv makers just love all these food plot implements that people are building to be used with atvs. It really boosts atv sales becasue it will tear them up and still not get the job done. I don't see Honda building food plot equipment for their atvs. Now I wonder why that is? If you are going to farm, get a tractor. An atv is great for checking on cattle, running from field to field, etc. but it ain`t no tractor.

Not only will you destroy the 4 wheeler, you may destroy you. Some guys tried that here a few years back on MODERATE rolling ground, but it wasnt moderate enough. The rake pushed the quad and really beat the guy up and totaled the quad. Bent the frame

You may be better off buying a lawn tractor that has the torque and durability to pull a rake then using a 4-wheeler. My Polaris sportmen 400 will do some gravel grading in low gear, but I may burn it up pulling a rake in hay. For 5k-6k dollars I would think you could get a solid garden tractor, new or used. I just saw a Cub Cadet at home depot yesterday for $3,000 or so. In my area a guy had an older 16 HP cub cadet for sale he was asking $500 for it.

Here's an idea. Buy a farmall H for $900 dollars and pull the rake all day and save yourself from destroying a $6000 dollar quad that has no business pulling a farm implement of any kind. I have a polaris 500 sportsman 6x6 that I would not want to pull a rake with. It would probably pull it but would shorten its life expectency significantly. Actually tractors make better atv's than atv's make tractors!

My thoughts exactly. An old H or Allis WD can be found pretty cheap and would make a good tractor for occasional raking and wagon pulling.

You might want to look into an even bigger bore ATV for that. Polaris has a Sportsman 800 twin 4x4 out thats a really heavy machine at something like 800 some odd pounds, and is rated to pull something like 1,500lbs. Polaris has all the details on their site. Yamaha is going to be increasing their Grizzly from a 660 to a 700 next month according to my local dealer.

Rich

Ive used my Honda 400 4 wheel drive to rake up the corners after rest of hay was off.

With a 258 New Holland rake with dolly wheels.

About 10 minutes was all I did on flat ground and if I want my Honda to last I will NOT do it again.

They are not made to pull long periods.

It got pretty warm in those 10 minutes.

I pulled my atv with my planter last spring. Seriously!

Didn't wanna make two trips, so I tied a rope around the heavy beam on the planter, then tied on to the crash bars on the front of the 4wheeler. Had to stop a few times to straighten it out when it wanted to wander, but otherwise it didn't seem to hurt anything.
