Ken, for that to happen it may well be EITHER:

A) BOTH that the auto fuel shutoff sediment bowl assembly failed to shut the gas off as it should PLUS the carbs float n needle valve n seat assembly is bad (not shutting gas off at proper bowl lever before it floods over), OR

B) The auto shut off sediment bowl assembly has a leaky diaphram allowing gas from the tank to get into the oil via the oil lines that run to that assembly.

Since A has to have 2 things to BOTH go bad, its my best guess its B that the auto shut off has a leaky diaphram, its a fairly common problem and not to expensive or hard to repair. Mother Deere has the diaphram rebuild kits.

If you remove the lil oil lines there at the TEE on the assembly and gas runs out, thats the problem cuz theres only supposed to be oil there unless the rubber diaphram is leaking.

When I rebuild mine I get the 2 new rubber diaphrams plus I replace the lil washer/o ring on top the lil vertical shut off plunger.

THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME... the diaphram in the oil pressure shut off can leak right into the crankcase its not the carb.

we even had it happen with new diaphrams installed by a "professional" we have got so we INSTALL manual shutoffs and plug the oil lines... exept on the one (nockon wood) 630 I mow hay with-- its not done it since the rebuild 5yrs ago...

You have a carbureter problem. Either a bad float or the needle valve is sticking. On a John Deere, the fuel tank and carb are all above the cylinders so it is a matter of gravity flow seeking the lowest point, if the carb isn't functioning properly. Most 2 cyl owners keep the fuel shut off when not in use.

Here's the cause, I think. A. You've not shut off the gas line "up-stream;" e.g., at the sediment bowl and/or; B. If you have turned it off, the shut-off valve is not functioning, so that gas continues to flow into the carb. and; C. The carb fills because the float has a hole in it or because it is stuck "down" and; D. Gas continues to flow/drain into the cylinders, and beyond. Thus, gas in oil.

Sound plausible?

Take the opportunity to clean up the tranny.

Bad float or fuel leaking by the needle valve.

My 620 did that and it was the diaphrams in the automatic fuel shut off. The dealer said that happened quite often. The sediment bowl has an automatic fuel shut off and there are 2 diaphrams that probably need to be replaced. It's an easy fix.

same thing happened to my 530. I replaced the diaphrams in the auto shut off, and drained 4 gal out of the crankcase

I read the above posts about shutting off the fuel and if it is original there is not a manual shut off, it is automatic when it works.
