What is the best blasting medium to use in a shop sand blasting cabinet? I'm thinking that the sand type stuff will clump up w/ moisture and cause problems. The advantage of a blast cabinet is to be able to use in for any small clean up job w/o a lot of prep time. Can some readers w/ experience with this please opine?

At work I had access to two blasting systems.

Sand worked best for removing rust. Plastic media wouldn't touch it.

Plastic media worked best for removing paint. Went at least twice as fast as sand.

So, now you need 2 cabinets!

I would stay away from anything containing silica unless you have have some heavy duty air breathing protection. Silicosis is nasty stuff.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health studied 99 cases of silicosis from exposure to crystalline silica during sandblasting during the late 1990's. Of the 99 workers reported, 14 have died from the disease, and at the time of the study the remaining 85 were at risk of death from silicosis and its complications.

It's in an enclosed cabinet, with a dust collection system. Maybe I should be concerned about the health of the vacuum system?

Last winter I built a sand blasting cabinet out of wood. I use silica sand as the medium. My shop is not insulated, and is heated only when I am working out there. I do occasionally have problems with moisture in the compressed air, but it does not seem to effect the sand. I use silica sand because it is readily available and is the least expensive material I can find, plus it does a very good job.

Would a small wattage bulb keep it from clumping when not in use, and ready to go when you need it.

We've tried just about everything in our cabinet from regular blasting sand to glass beads to ground cullet. The best stuff we've found and what we've been using for nearly 6 years is Black Beauty. It's course and has alot of sharp edges per piece so it cuts quick, still it doesn't leave the finish of the piece too rough to deal with.
