Didn't even get 500 bales off the irrigated fields this year. The average is over 1200. We won't even set foot in the non-irrigated fields that yielded over 3000 last year. Horse hay will be expensive this year. I'll post some haying pictures shortly. It is a shame to have all this equipment for only 500 bales.

Mine is looking pretty good. After adding phosphorus and spraying for weevils, I got so much hay I had to stack some of it in the neighbor's field!

Plenty of hay around here. Helped the neighbor bale this morning. He has about 20-25 acres and got 900 bales and there is still 1/4 of the field left! He has about another smaller field that was just as thick, getting it large squared though cuz he ran out of racks.

Sorry to hear that Curt. Not too bad here, we irrigated late last fall, and early this spring. I laid down some windrows today that were as big as any I ever have. Probably getting close to 2.5 tons an acre on first cutting. Hopefully I can sell it all, and from the sounds of the neighbors on this site, it sounds like I might.

Do you ever sell any hay through brokers to Lancaster County Pa? In my farm paper there are several ads for guys bringing hay in from the west. Its a fairly comman practice now, or it was till fuel shot up. Just Kinda curious.

I've sold a lot of hay that has headed east, but where I'm not real sure. Most of the time the broker won't tell me an exact location, so I can't try and eliminate the middle man. I know I've had hay go as far as Florida, so I'm sure that PA is a possibility, but I don't know for sure. Fuel prices have slowed down some of the long hauls, but the absolute premium is still worth shipping appearantly.

Been lucky here in South central Kansas. Rains have come when needed. Cut 17 acre patch of Brome last evening. Estimate it to make 2.5-3 ton an acre. Everything went right on this field. I have others that will only go a ton an acre. Bluestem is what will make really well. It is near 2' tall and don't cut it till july. I haven't heard what alfalfa is doing around here, I don't grow it yet.

I talked to a guy that had baled a 20 acre field (grass) and got 4.5 bales (baled with JD 530) I thought my field of 25 acres(Grass)with 18 bales was bad (baled with vermeer 605K) but I guess it better than some. Usually make 35 to 45 bales on first cutting.
Talked to another friend and he had gotten 30 bales off his fields and last year on the same fields he had 205 bales at this time.
I plan on start selling some of my cows the first of July, grass is getting real short and no rain in sight, just 100+ days

It's awful!

I'm gonna bale my new alfalfa seeding of last fall in the morning. If I can get a bale per acre, I'll be just plain tickled. :>)

Be thankfull Allan. There is a lot of dryland alfala down here that is not worth cutting. I got nearly a bale to the acre on mine. And yeah, I was well pleased.

I notice that a lot of the "big boys" aren't even botherin' to go out to the field. Just wrote it off, I guess.

Have a friend that just finished 1400 wrapped big rounds of alfala and some mixed grass and alfalfa off 245 acres...no rain on any of it. He wants to sell it!

I hear ya Curt, and it's tough all over, even worse south of here. I lucked out. Guy in town wanted me to put up 20 acres of irrigated alfalfa on shares. Just rolled it up this morning, 45 bales, kinda bleached out and stemmy but the bossie cows will eat anything next winter. I'd still like to roll up a couple hundred bales of wheat straw.

Funny you should mention Straw. I can remember when straw was alot cheaper than hay. Now around here it cost more than good hay!! There is something just wrong with that.....

Get"n 20-25 bales per acre here(small 80# squares)About one ton per acre.
All grass - timothy an orchard grass. Finally drying out where I can get to some field that I had to pass over earlier - still working on first cutting because of the rain. Usually get that one done before the end of May.

haying seems to be such a boom or bust thing. in SW Manitoba unless something drastic happens there will be a huge surplus of hay this year (again). A rancher can probably buy hay right now cheaper than he can grow it and bale it. When you sell it any distance away, of course freight kills you. A lot of guys have been putting up silage because it has a longer "shelf life". Most hay growers around here can also remember getting fewer bales than acres.
